Abstract

We report on the measurement of the linear polarization degree of the $3s{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ $\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$ $3p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{3/2}$ $\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$ $5s{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ transition in atomic sodium. A linearly polarized pump laser creates an alignment in the excited ${}^{23}$Na $3p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{3/2}$ level. From the spectra, we extracted the inelastic collision cross section for the disalignment of the excited atoms by collisions with ground-level argon or xenon atoms. Measurements were done by monitoring the intensity of the cascade fluorescence from the $4p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{1/2}$ $\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$ $3s{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ transition at 330.29 nm, in the presence of Ar and Xe for pressures ranging from 5.3 to 146.6 mbar. We demonstrated that the polarization measurement can provide important information about the alignment-dependent inelastic process in alkali-metal--rare-gas collisions. A depolarization cross-section value of 196 (22) \AA{}${}^{2}$ for Na-Ar and 357 (21) \AA{}${}^{2}$ for Na-Xe are obtained.

Anisotropy-dependent circular polarization spectroscopy

S. B. Bayram, Ramesh Marhatta

We have experimentally investigated the anisotropy-dependent circular polarization spectra of the $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ $6s^{2}S_{1∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6p^{2}P_{3∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}10s^{2}S_{1∕2}$ double-resonance transition in the presence of Ar. Satisfaction of double-resonance condition, achieved by use of a two-photon two-color pulse laser excitation scheme, was monitored by measurement of the intensity of the $9p^{2}P_{1∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6s^{2}S_{1∕2}$ cascade fluorescence at $361.73\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$. In the experiment anisotropies, namely, alignment and orientation in the $6p^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level, were produced from circularly polarized light with positive helicity. Then, a circular polarization degree was measured when both lasers were circularly polarized with positive helicities, and alternately positive and negative helicities for the $6p^{2}P_{3∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}10s^{2}S_{1∕2}$ transition. From the measurement, we obtained the orientation-dependent depolarization cross section in the $6p^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level due to collisions with ground-level argon atoms. A disorientation cross section value of 151 $(42)\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$ is reported.

Polarization spectra of excited-state-Mg(3p)–rare-gas-atom optical collisions

Rosemary A. Lasell, D. A. Olsgaard, Mark D. Havey +1 more

Experimental, polarization-dependent excitation spectra for excited-state-Mg--rare-gas-atom optical collisions are reported. In these first studies of the process, polarized Mg atoms in the 3p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ level are produced by absorption of linearly polarized light tuned to the 3s $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ resonance transition at 285.2 nm. Detuning-dependent, collision-induced polarization spectra are measured in a \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}200-${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ range around the Mg 3p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5s $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$ transition at 571.2 nm. The spectra correspond to probing transient Mg-Ne and Mg-Ar molecules on 3p $^{1}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5s $^{1}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{0}^{+}$ and 3p $^{1}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{0}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5s $^{1}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{0}^{+}$ electronic transitions. Measurements of these excited-state polarization spectra for Mg-Ne optical collisions reveal that for detunings to the red of the atomic Mg 3p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5s $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$ transition, electronic linear polarization greater than 50% survives far into the molecular regime. This represents a direct measure of the polarization important to alignment-dependent inelastic processes in alkaline-earth-metal--rare-gas-atom collisions. The polarization spectra are discussed in terms of existing information on the interatomic potentials and through an axial recoil limit for the polarization degree for parallel and perpendicular molecular transitions. Rate coefficients k for disalignment of Mg 3p $^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ atoms by collisions with Ar [k=9.4(5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}10}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$/s] and with Ne [k=6.5(7)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}10}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$/s] are also extracted from the data.

Collisional modification of the atomic-Na 3s 2 S1/2 –5s 2 S1/2 two-color two-photon polarization spectrum

LeRoy F. Cook, D. A. Olsgaard, Mark D. Havey +1 more

An experimental investigation of the atomic-Na 3s $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2--}$5s $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2}$ two-color two-photon polarization spectrum has been made. Measurements of the linear polarization degree of the two-photon transition were made for one laser tuned within a \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}100 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ range of the atomic-Na 3p $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{\mathit{j}}$ levels, with the second adjusted to satisfy the two-photon resonance condition. The relatively short-pulse (\ensuremath{\sim}0.5 ns) lasers used eliminate effects on the spectrum due to atomic-Na hyperfine interactions and radiation trapping, while greatly reducing depolarization due to collisions with Ar gas. In the absence of collisions, the measured polarization spectrum is in excellent agreement with calculations. Measurements of the Ar pressure dependence of the spectrum revealed strong depolarization in the vicinity of resonant excitation through the 3p $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$ level. A collisional depolarization cross section of 200(30) \AA{} for this process was deduced from the data.

Laser-induced optical pumping measurements of cross sections for fine- and hyperfine-structure transitions in sodium induced by collisions with helium and argon atoms

Chris C. Dobson, Chi C. Sung

Optical pumping of the ground states of sodium can radically alter the shape of the laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum, complicating measurements of temperature, pressure, etc., which are based on these spectra. Modeling of the fluorescence using rate equations for the eight hyperfine states of the sodium D manifolds can be used to quantify the contribution to the ground state pumping of transitions among the hyperfine excited states induced by collisions with buffer gas atoms. This model is used here to determine, from the shape of experimental spectra, cross sections for $\ensuremath{\Delta}F$ transitions of the ${P}_{3/2}$ state induced by collisions with helium and argon atoms, for a range of values assumed for the ${P}_{1/2}, \ensuremath{\Delta}F$ cross sections. The hyperfine cross sections measured using this method, which to our knowledge is novel, are compared with cross sections for transitions involving polarized magnetic substates ${m}_{F}$ measured previously using polarization sensitive absorption. Also, fine-structure transition $(\ensuremath{\Delta}J)$ cross sections were measured in the pumped vapor, giving agreement with previous measurements made in the absence of pumping.

S. B. Bayram, Seda Kin, M. J. Welsh +1 more

An experimental investigation of the Cs $6s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}10s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}$ double-resonance two-photon polarization spectrum has been made. In the investigation, a linear polarization degree was measured to extract the alignment depolarization cross section in the cesium $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level due to collisions between ground-level argon and excited $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ cesium atoms over the Zeeman coherences. The spectra show strong depolarization of the Cs $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level. The measured alignment depolarization cross section value of 186 $(58)\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$ is in good agreement with the experiment and theoretical predictions.

Excited-State Magnesium-Rare Gas Optical Collisions

Rosemary A. Lasell

Polarization and intensity spectra have been obtained for excited-state magnesium (3s3p 1P1) - rare gas optical collisions. The magnesium was excited by a linearly polarized laser tuned to the 3s21s0 → 3s3p 1P1 atomic transition at 285 nm. A second linearly polarized laser was tuned near the 3s3p 1P1 → 3s5s 1S0 transition at 571 nm (experiment A) and near the 3s3p 1P1 → 3s4d 1D2 transition at 553 nm (experiment B). The polarization vector of the second laser was oriented either parallel or perpendicular to the polarization direction of the first laser. The absorption of nonresonant light from the second laser, possible only during a collision, was monitored by cascade fluorescence from the 3s21S0 ← 3s4p 1P1 transition at 203 nm. For each detuning of the second laser from resonance, the degree of linear polarization and the intensity were measured. For experiment A, argon and neon were used as rare gases. For experiment B, argon was the rare gas used. For experiment B, fluorescence from the 3s3p 1P1 ← 3s5s 1S0 transition, and the 3s3p3Pj ← 3s5s 3S1 transition at 333 nm were also measured in an attempt to observe the region of inelastic transitions in the molecular states. No inelastic branching was observed in this experiment.
