Abstract

We extend a previous result of ours [G.S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B63 (2001) 224413] on the antiferromagnetic spin correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model at finite temperature to the double-exchange model. To overcome the mathematical difficulty caused by the localized spin freedom in this model, we apply both Zener's argument and the finite-temperature spin-reflection-positivity method to show rigorously that, at any temperature , the spin correlations in the half-filled double-exchange model are predominantly antiferromagnetic. This conclusion is completely consistent with the experimental observations and the previous theoretical results by approximate methods.

Antiferromagnetic correlation in the half-filled strongly correlated electron models at nonzero temperature: A rigorous result

Guang-Shan Tian

As an extension of our previous rigorous investigation on the spin correlations in the ground states of the half-filled Hubbard model and the periodic Anderson model [G. S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B 50, 6246 (1994)], in the present paper we study the behavior of these correlation functions at finite temperature. We show rigorously that, at any $T\ensuremath{\ne}0,$ the predominant spin correlations in these systems are antiferromagnetic. Furthermore, based on this result, we also show that a quasi-one (or two)-dimensional itinerant electron ferrimagnet must have a gapless branch of ferromagnetic excitations. This conclusion is consistent with the previous results derived by the spin-wave theory.

Properties of the one-dimensional half-filled-band extended Hubbard model

Fernando O. Freire, Cláudio Andrade Macedo

With the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the finite-temperature properties of low-dimensional strongly correlated systems we study a one-dimensional half-filled-band extended Hubbard model with a term of exchange interaction between neighboring sites. We analyze the temperature dependence of the specific heat, internal energy, entropy, number of doubly occupied sites, magnetic susceptibility, spin-spin correlation functions, and also investigate a detailed diagram of magnetic correlations. We use the method of small-cluster exact diagonalization calculations with the application of the grand canonical ensemble and of extrapolation techniques to the infinite chain. Our results show that the examined model exhibits a rich structure of magnetic properties due to the competition between the onsite Coulombian repulsion and the exchange interaction.

Dynamical exchange-correlation potential formalism for spin- 12 Heisenberg and Hubbard chains: The antiferromagnetic/half-filled case

Zhen Zhao, Claudio Verdozzi, F. Aryasetiawan

The exchange-correlation potential formalism previously introduced and applied to the one-dimensional Hubbard model has been extended to spin systems and applied to the case of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model. Within the spin exchange-correlation potential formulation, a sum rule for spin systems is derived. The exchange-correlation potential for the Heisenberg model is extrapolated from exact diagonalization results of small antiferromagnetic Heisenberg clusters. This procedure is also employed to revisit and computationally improve the previous investigation of the exchange-correlation potential of the half-filled Hubbard model, which was based on the exchange-correlation potential of the dimer. Numerical comparisons with exact benchmark calculations for both the Heisenberg and the Hubbard models indicate that, starting from the exchange-correlation potential of a finite cluster, the extrapolation procedure yields a one-particle spectral function with favorable accuracy at a relatively low computational cost. In addition, a comparison between the ground-state energies for the one-dimensional Hubbard and Heisenberg models displays how the well-known similarity in behavior of the two models at large interactions manifests itself within the exchange-correlation potential formalism.

Antiferromagnetic polarisation around local moments in the Hubbard model

Andrzej M. Oleś

The local approach to electron correlation in the Hubbard model has been extended to include charge and spin correlations between nearest neighbours. Both these effects are particularly important near the half-filled band and further stabilise local moments. Polarisation induced by local moments is shown to be antiferromagnetic independently of the band filling. A considerable gain in energy connected with the formation of the polarisation cloud indicates that short-range order should exist also at relatively high temperatures.

Incipient Antiferromagnetism and Low-Energy Excitations in the Half-Filled Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

J. J. Deisz, D. W. Hess, Joseph W. Serene

We present single-particle and thermodynamic properties of the half-filled single-band Hubbard model in 2D calculated in the self-consistent fluctuation exchange approximation. The low-energy excitations at moderate temperatures and small $U$ are quasiparticles with a short lifetime. As the temperature is lowered, coupling to evolving spin fluctuations leads to the extinction of these quasiparticles, signaled by a weak pseudogap in the density of states and by a positive slope in $\mathrm{Re}\ensuremath{\Sigma}({\mathbf{k}}_{F},\ensuremath{\varepsilon})$ and a local maximum in $|\mathrm{Im}\ensuremath{\Sigma}({\mathbf{k}}_{F},\ensuremath{\varepsilon})|$ at $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$. We explain these results using a simple spin-fluctuation model.
