Abstract

We demonstrate a pulsed entanglement source whose flux is sufficiently high that it leads to reduced quantum-interference visibility due to multiple-pair emissions. An array of such pulsed downconverters can be configured to yield single photons on demand.

Optimal generation of pulsed entangled photon pairs

Juan F. Hodelin, G. Khoury, Dirk Bouwmeester

We experimentally investigate a double-pass parametric down-conversion scheme for producing pulsed, polarization-entangled photon pairs with high visibility. The amplitudes for creating photon pairs on each pass interfere to compensate for distinguishing characteristics that normally degrade two-photon visibility. The result is a high-flux source of polarization-entangled photon pulses that does not require spectral filtering. We observe quantum interference visibility of over 95% without the use of spectral filters for $200\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{fs}$ pulses, and up to 98.1% with $5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ bandwidth filters.

Efficient and pure femtosecond-pulse-length source of polarization-entangled photons

We present a source of polarization entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous parametric downconversion engineered for frequency uncorrelated telecom photon generation. Our source provides photon pairs that display, simultaneously, the key properties for high-performance quantum information and fundamental quantum science tasks. Specifically, the source provides for high heralding efficiency, high quantum state purity and high entangled state fidelity at the same time. Among different tests we apply to our source we observe almost perfect non-classical interference between photons from independent sources with a visibility of (100 ± 5)%.

On-demand single-photon generation using a modular array of parametric downconverters with electro-optic polarization controls

Jeffrey H. Shapiro, Franco N. C. Wong

We describe a method for generating single photons on demand by means of a modular array of spontaneous parametric downconverters that are mediated by electro-optic polarization controls. Our scheme allows easy addition of downconverter modules to improve single-photon generation performance while simultaneously further suppressing multiphoton events. We estimate that a single-photon generation probability of over 60% per pulse with a multiphoton probability of 1% is achievable with currently available technology. This on-demand source may significantly improve the performance of quantum key distribution, quantum communication, and quantum computation systems.

Compact sources of correlated and entangled photons

We present two experiments geared toward the realization of a robust and intense source of polarization-entangled photons. First, we describe a novel source of polarization-entangled pairs that uses periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) and an interferometer based on polarization beam displacers. The source emits an intense flux of high-quality single-mode entangled photons and is stable, robust, and easy to align. Second, we report on sources of correlated photons generated in PPKTP waveguides. Waveguide sources of correlated pairs have been shown to generate high fluxes of pairs: we theoretically and experimentally investigate spontaneous parametric down-conversion generation of photon pairs in waveguides at different wavelengths.
