Quantum squeezed states under self-interaction conditions: influence of dispersion on the squeezing spectrum

Abstract

An analysis is made of wide-band conversion of quantum fluctuations of radiation in the case of self-interaction of a high-intensity monochromatic wave in a dispersive medium characterized by a cubic nonlinearity. The squeezing spectrum is determined. It is shown that the effective generation of squeezed states is possible only in a limited range of frequencies governed by the dispersion of the medium.

Generation of quadrature-squeezed light of ultrashort pulses in a medium with inertial cubic nonlinearity

A. S. Chirkin, F. Popescu

A consistent quantum theory of self-action and cross-interaction of coherent light pulses in a cubically nonlinear medium is developed by using the momentum operator of the field, which takes into account the inertial nonlinearity. Specific features of generation of the quadrature-squeezed states of light pulses are considered. The spectrum of fluctuations of a quadrature below the shot-noise level is analyzed as a function of the relaxation time of nonlinearity and the magnitude of nonlinear phase additions, related to the self-action and cross-interaction.

Parametric forward scattering and intensity fluctuations of light in squeezed states

Mikhail I. Kolobov, I. V. Sokolov

The intensity fluctuation spectrum of light in a squeezed state produced from three-wave parametric interaction of travelling waves is examined. The effect of dispersion of the medium (phase matching) on the possibility of reducing the photodetection noise below the Schottky level is investigated. The energy and spectral correlations of the parametric scattering and squeezing phenomena are discussed.

Squeezed states of light pulses in the presence of a self-effect in an inertial nonlinear medium

F. Popesku, A. S. Chirkin

A systematic theory of the formation of squeezed states during the propagation of coherent light pulses in a medium with an inertial Kerr nonlinearity is developed. It is established that the region of the spectrum where the quadrature fluctuations are weaker than the shot noise depends on both the relaxation time of the nonlinearity and the magnitude of the nonlinear phase shift. It is also shown that the frequency at which suppression of the fluctuations is greatest can be controlled by adjusting the phase of the pulse.

Polarization-Squeezed Light Formation in Cubic–Nonlinear Medium with Dissipation

A. S. Chirkin, V. V. Volokhovskii

The influence of losses and thermal noise on the polarization-squeezed light formation in a medium with third order nonlinearity has been analysed. A method of analysis based on the delta-correlation property of noise was developed. Mean values and variances of some Stokes parameter of the light was calculated. It was shown that optimal interaction length for effective fluctuation suppression in the Stokes parameters is determined by damping constants, noise level, and radiation intensity.

Hybrid squeezing of solitonic resonant radiation in photonic crystal fibers

Truong X. Tran, Fabio Biancalana

Squeezing is a fundamental quantum optical phenomenon - induced by various nonlinear optical processes - in which a special state of the electromagnetic field is generated, for which quantum noise fluctuations are reduced below the shot noise level for certain frequency ranges. Two qualitatively different kinds of squeezing are currently known to take place in optical fibers. The first is the four-wave mixing (FWM) induced quadrature squeezing, in which an intense continuous wave (CW) pump initiates a spontaneous emission of signal and idler waves from vacuum fluctuations at symmetric detunings from the pump. The noise components at the signal and idler frequencies become correlated via the fiber nonlinearity, leading to a reduction of the noise power spectrum below the shot noise level. All the waves participating to the FWM-induced squeezing are monochromatic waves. The second kind of squeezing is the so called self-phase modulation (SPM) induced squeezing, in which the spectral components of an intense short pulse in a coherent state become correlated via the SPM during propagation. We demonstrate theoretically that a third kind of squeezing is possible in optical fibers, in which the noise spectrum of the quasi-monochromatic resonant radiation (RR) emitted by optical solitons when subject to perturbations shows evidence of photon correlation and a reduction of noise below the shot-noise level.

Squeezed states and the interaction of electromagnetic waves with plasma

Y. Ben-Aryeh, A. Mann

A theory is developed for the interaction of coherent electromagnetic (EM) radiation with a free electron gas and for the influence of the plasma on the photon statistics of the radiation field. Two important possibilities for generating squeezed states are shown: Squeezed states can be generated by the interaction of a one-mode laser with a plasma in a cavity; squeezed states can be generated by transmitting coherent radiation through the plasma. The maximal squeezing of the radiation obtained in the latter case is equal to the reciprocal of the dielectric constant of the plasma. Inside the plasma the EM field is represented by quasiphotons. Their dispersion relations are derived by using Bogoliubov transformations together with a self-consistency requirement for the motion of the electrons interacting with these quasiphotons. The squeezing processes are found to be strong when the frequency of the radiation is a little above the plasma frequency. By adding a constant magnetic field in the direction of propagation of the EM wave different amounts of squeezing are obtained for right- and left-circularly polarized EM waves.
