Abstract

Metric of quantum states plays an important role in quantum information theory. In this letter, we find the deep connection between quantum logic theory and quantum information theory. Using the method of quantum logic, we can get a famous inequality in quantum information theory, and we answer a question raised by S. Gudder.

Super fidelity and related metrics

Abstract We report a new metric of quantum states. This metric is built up from super-fidelity, which has a deep connection with the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity and plays an important role in quantum information processing. We find that the new metric possesses some interesting properties.

Quantum Measured Information

Yi-Xin Chen

A framework for a quantum information theory is introduced that is based on the measure of quantum information associated with probability distribution predicted by quantum measuring of state. The entanglement between states of measured system and "pointer" states of measuring apparatus, which is generated by dynamical process of quantum measurement, plays a dominant role in expressing quantum characteristics of information theory. The quantum mutual information of transmission and reception of quantum states along a noisy quantum channel is given by the change of quantum measured information. In our approach, it is not necessary to purify the transmitted state by means of the reference system. It is also clarified that there exist relations between the approach given in this letter and those given by other authors.

NATURAL METRIC FOR QUANTUM INFORMATION THEORY

P. W. LAMBERTI, M. PORTESI, J. SPARACINO

We study in detail a very natural metric for quantum states. This new proposal has two basic ingredients: entropy and purification. The metric for two mixed states is defined as the square root of the entropy of the average of representative purifications of those states. Some basic properties are analyzed and its relation to other distances is investigated. As an illustrative application, the proposed metric is evaluated for one-qubit mixed states.

Fidelity and Metrics of quantum states

Zhihao Ma, Fulin Zhang, Jing‐Ling Chen

Fidelity plays an important role in quantum information theory. In this paper, two pairs of metrics of quantum states are introduced based on the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity and super-fidelity. They are proved to satisfy the axioms of metrics and return to the Sine metric and Bures metric for the qubit case. The CP expansive property and convex property of the metrics are studied. These metrics have deep connections with the known important metrics such as trace metric, Sine metric, Bures metric, and spectral metric, and are useful to quantify entanglement. I. Background, problem, and result Suppose one has two quantum states ρ and σ, then the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity [1] between ρ and σ is given by F(ρ, σ) = [Tr ρ 1 2 σρ 1 2] 2. Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity plays an important role in quantum information theory and quantum computation [1], [2]. We know that for the case of qubit, Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity has a simple form. From the Bloch sphere representation of quantum states, a qubit is described by a density matrix as([3]): ρ(u) = 1 (I + σ · u), 2 where I is the 2 × 2 unit matrix and σ = (σ1, σ2, σ3) are the Pauli matrices. Assume ρ(u) and ρ(v) are two states of one qubit, then they can represented by two vectors u and v in the Bloch sphere. The Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity for qubits has an elegant form([4] and [5]): F(ρ(u), ρ(v)) = 1 2 [1 + u · v + √ 1 − |u | 2 √ 1 − |v | 2], where u · v is the inner product of two vectors u and v, and |u | is the magnitude of u. We know that for N × N quantum states, the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity has no simple form like the case of qubits. To use the simple form of fidelity, we note that in [6], the authors introduce a new fidelity, called super-fidelity, and proved that Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity can be bounded above by the super-fidelity G(ρ1, ρ2): F(ρ1, ρ2) ≤ G(ρ1, ρ2)

Distance measures for quantum states and channels: properties and applications

Vita Borovyk, Badri N. Vellambi

Discriminating between quantum states and channels is an important task in the field of quantum computation and quantum information theory. Metrics and statistical distances form the tools for various approaches proposed for this task. We analyse existing results to compare properties, main purpose, computability and advantages and disadvantages of each approach. This article is part of the theme issue 'Numerical analysis, spectral graph theory, orthogonal polynomials and quantum algorithms'.
