Abstract

Presented and discussed are localized structures of the Bose-Einstein condensate permanently exchanging energy with oscillating walls of the trap. Dynamics of oscillons is compared with that in the Fermi–Ulam and Fermi–Pasta–Ulam problems.

Oscillons of Bose–Einstein condensate (A review)

Nikolay N. Rosanov, Nikolay A. Veretenov, N. V. Vysotina +3 more

The dynamics of localized structures of atomic Bose–Einstein condensate in traps with oscillating walls has been analyzed. The properties of these oscillons localized in the longitudinal and transverse directions with respect to the trap axis are compared with the properties of conservative and dissipative solitons.

Interactions of Bose–Einstein-Condensate Oscillons

N. V. Vysotina, Nikolay N. Rosanov, A. N. Shatsev

The interaction of two one-dimensional spatial vector structures of a Bose–Einstein atomic condensate in a trap with significant transverse dimensions and oscillating walls has been simulated numerically. Different types of coupled structures and different scenarios of their collisions are revealed. A comparison is made with the properties of scalar solitons, which are described by the traditional nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

On three-dimensional dynamics of oscillons of Bose–Einstein condensate

Nikolay N. Rosanov

Three-dimensional motion of the center of the localized structure of atomic Bose–Einstein condensate in a dynamic trap has been analyzed. The transverse and longitudinal motions of the structure center are separated within the approximation of Newtonian-type mechanical equation. The transverse-motion equations are solved for the axisymmetric and quadratic transverse potentials.

Matter wave focusing

D. R. Murray, Patrik Öhberg

We investigate the focusing dynamics of a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate. A comparison between the interacting and noninteracting case is made where self-similar solutions can be assumed. In addition, we discuss the stability of the cloud when local supersonic velocities are induced.

Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem revisited with a Bose-Einstein condensate

Pierre Villain, Maciej Lewenstein

We consider the evolution of an interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensate transferred from a harmonic trap to a perfect box of finite size. We study numerically the influence of the nonlinearities in the system on its dynamics. The parallelism between this problem and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem in the context of matter waves is established. Criteria for the appearance of statistical behavior are discussed. We show that by increasing the nonlinearity we pass from a regime of collapses and revivals for the wave function to a regime of collapses and revivals of regular motion.
