Critical behavior of the XY model in complex topologies

Abstract

The critical behavior of the $O(2)$ model on dilute L\'evy graphs built on a two-dimensional square lattice is analyzed. Different qualitative cases are probed, varying the exponent $\ensuremath{\rho}$ governing the dependence on the distance of the connectivity probability distribution. The mean-field regime, as well as the long-range and short-range non-mean-field regimes, are investigated by means of high-performance parallel Monte Carlo numerical simulations running on GPUs. The relationship between the long-range $\ensuremath{\rho}$ exponent and the effective dimension of an equivalent short-range system with the same critical behavior is investigated. Evidence is provided for the effective short-range dimension to coincide with the spectral dimension of the L\'evy graph for the $\mathit{XY}$ model in the mean-field regime.

Analysis of the low-temperature phase in the two-dimensional long-range diluted XY model

Cescatti Fabiana, Miguel Ibáñez-Berganza, A. Vezzani +1 more

The critical behavior of statistical models with long-range interactions exhibits distinct regimes as a function of $\ensuremath{\rho}$, the power of the interaction strength decay. For large enough $\ensuremath{\rho}, \ensuremath{\rho}>{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}$, the critical behavior is observed to coincide with that of the short-range model. However, there are controversial aspects regarding this picture, one of which is the value of the short-range threshold ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}$ in the case of the long-range XY model in two dimensions. We study the 2D XY model on the diluted graph, a sparse graph obtained from the 2D lattice by rewiring links with probability decaying with the Euclidean distance of the lattice as ${|r|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\rho}}$, which is expected to feature the same critical behavior of the long-range model. Through Monte Carlo sampling and finite-size analysis of the spontaneous magnetization and of the Binder cumulant, we present numerical evidence that ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{sr}}=4$. According to such a result, one expects the model to belong to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class for $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ge}4$, and to present a second-order transition for $\ensuremath{\rho}<4$.

Equivalent-neighbor percolation models in two dimensions: Crossover between mean-field and short-range behavior

Yunqing Ouyang, Youjin Deng, Henk W. J. Blöte

We investigate the influence of the range of interactions in the two-dimensional bond percolation model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges, as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. We also consider the $z\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ limit, i.e., the complete graph case, where percolation bonds are allowed between each pair of sites, and the model becomes mean-field-like. All investigated models with finite $z$ are found to belong to the short-range universality class. There is no evidence of a tricritical point separating the short-range and long-range behavior, such as is known to occur for $q=3$ and $q=4$ Potts models. We determine the renormalization exponent describing a finite-range perturbation at the mean-field limit as ${y}_{r}\ensuremath{\approx}2/3$. Its relevance confirms the continuous crossover from mean-field percolation universality to short-range percolation universality. For finite interaction ranges, we find approximate relations between the coordination numbers and the amplitudes of the leading correction terms as found in the finite-size scaling analysis.

Critical behavior of the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model

E. H. Boubcheur, H. T. Diep

We study the critical behavior of the fully frustrated $\mathrm{XY}$ model on a square lattice by means of extensive histogram Monte Carlo simulations. We find a single transition in contrast to the scenario of two distinct transitions. From a finite-size scaling we determine the critical exponents associated with the Ising-like order parameter and find ${T}_{c}(\ensuremath{\infty})=0.4552(2)$, $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.852(2),$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1.531(3)$. These exponents, different from the pure two-dimensional Ising critical exponents, are in agreement with the ones obtained for a mixed $\mathrm{XY}$ Ising system.

Boundary between Long-Range and Short-Range Critical Behavior in Systems with Algebraic Interactions

Erik Luijten, Henk W. J. Blöte

We investigate phase transitions of two-dimensional Ising models with power-law interactions, using an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm. For slow decay, the transition is of the mean-field type; for fast decay, it belongs to the short-range Ising universality class. We focus on the intermediate range, where the critical exponents depend continuously on the power law. We find that the boundary with short-range critical behavior occurs for interactions depending on distance r as r(-15/4). This answers a long-standing controversy between mutually conflicting renormalization-group analyses.
