Abstract

We study the stability of decoherence-free subspaces under stochastic phase fluctuations by analytically and numerically evaluating the fidelity of the corresponding decoherence-free subspace bases with stochastic phase fluctuations under the evolution of environment. The environment is modeled by a bath of oscillators with infinite degrees of freedom and the register-bath coupling is chosen to be a general dissipation-decoherence form. It is found that the decoherence-free subspaces take on good stability in the case of small dissipation and small phase fluctuations.

On dissipationless decoherence

Gautam Gangopadhyay, Manjit Kumar, Sushanta Dattagupta

We consider a model of environment-induced dissipationless decoherence of a quantum system where the system is coupled to the bath degrees of freedom via the system Hamiltonian itself. We solve exactly for the reduced density operator of the system for an arbitrary spectral density of the thermal bath and also write down an exact master equation in the Lindblad form. We compare and contrast the above results with those obtained by considering the system frequencies to be randomly modulated as in stochastic models. We observe that a coupling to the bath as above necessarily induces a Kerr-like coherent contribution in the reduced dynamics of the system. This Kerr-like term is a reflection of the quantum nature of the bath and cannot be obtained from stochastic models. For the special case of a harmonic oscillator we consider the influence of decoherence and its relation with phase diffusion. Our numerical results exhibit oscillations in the evolution of system variables which overall is a signature of the quantum nature of the environment.

Decoherence Sturdy Memories in the Presence of Quantum Dissipation

K. M. Fonseca-Romero, S. G. Mokarzel, Maria Carolina Nemes

We consider N identical oscillators coupled to a single environment and show that the conditions for the existence of decoherence free subspaces are degeneracy of the oscillator frequencies and separability of the coupling with the environment. A formal exact equation for the evolution in the case of two oscillators is found and the decoherence free subspace is explicitly determined. A full analytical solution for any initial condition and general parameters (frequencies and dissipation constants) is given in the markovian approximation and zero temperature. We find that slight relaxation of degeneracy and separability conditions leads to the appearence of two components in the dynamical evolution with very different decoherence times. The ratio between the characteristic time of the weak and strong decoherent components is given by $τ_{WD}/τ_{SD}\approx k/δk$, where $δk$ is a measure of the nonseparability of the coupling to the environment and $k$ is the mean decay constant of the oscillators.

Dynamical fidelity susceptibility of decoherence-free subspaces

Joris Kattemölle, Jasper van Wezel

In idealized models of a quantum register and its environment, quantum information can be stored indefinitely by encoding it into a decoherence-free subspace (DFS). Nevertheless, perturbations to the idealized register-environment coupling will cause decoherence in any realistic setting. Expanding a measure for state preservation, the dynamical fidelity, in powers of the strength of the perturbations, we prove stability to linear order is a generic property of quantum state evolution. The effect of noise perturbation is quantified by a concise expression for the strength of the quadratic leading order, which we define as the dynamical fidelity susceptibility of DFSs. Under the physical restriction that noise acts on the register $k$-locally, this susceptibility is bounded from above by a polynomial in the system size. These general results are illustrated by two physically relevant examples. Knowledge of the susceptibility can be used to increase coherence times of future quantum computers.

Dissipative dynamics in a quantum register

Paolo Zanardi A

A model for a quantum register dissipatively coupled with a bosonic thermal bath is studied. The register consists of $N$ quantum bits (qubits) the bath is described by ${N}_{b}$ bosonic modes. The register-bath coupling is chosen in such a way that the total number of excitations is conserved. The Hilbert space splits, allowing the study of the dynamics separately in each sector. Assuming that the coupling with the bath is the same for all qubits, the excitation sectors have a further decomposition according the irreducible representations of the su(2) spin algebra. The stability against environment-generated noise of the information encoded in a quantum state of the register depends on its SU(2) symmetry content. At zero temperature we find that states belonging to the vacuum symmetry sector have, for long time, vanishing fidelity, whereas each lowest spin vector is decoupled from the bath and therefore is decoherence free. Numerical results are shown in the one-excitation space in the case of qubit-dependent bath-system coupling.

Testing the Dissipative Type of a Qubit Interacting with Environment

Zeng Hao-Sheng, Kuang Le-Man, Kelin Gao

We propose a method to test the correctness of the coupling model of a qubit interacting with environment and to determine the type of dissipation. The environment is modelled by a bath of oscillators with infinite degrees of freedom and the qubit-bath coupling is chosen to be a general dissipation-decoherence form. The proposed method can be realized in current experiments.
