Abstract

We have generated by parametric down-conversion and fully characterized an ultrafast highly multimode frequency comb with strong genuine multipartite quantum entanglement between its different frequency components. Such a quantum state of light has promising applications in wavelength multiplexed quantum information processing and computing.

Gaussian and non-Gaussian multimode entangled states of optical frequency combs (Conference Presentation)

Nicolas Treps

Optical Gaussian entangled states can be generated deterministically, up to very large number of modes. Furthermore, for nontrivial quantum computation, non-Gaussianity is required, which can be obtained from photon subtraction. We will explore here the controlled generation of multimode graph states from ultrafast optical pulses (optical frequency combs) and parametric down conversion in a synchronously pumped cavity, investigating in particular spectral shaping of the pump. Mode dependent photon subtraction is then implemented through sum-frequency generation, and characterization is performed through frequency resolved homodyne detection. We study the influence of a non Gaussian ingredient on a Gaussian graph state.

Quantum correlations in integrated photonic frequency combs

Laurent Labonté, Adrien Bensemhoun, Dorian Oser +12 more

Integrated photonic platforms provide a powerful route toward scalable and stable quantum light sources. In this presentation, we explore how quantum correlations can be generated, distributed, and characterized in the frequency domain using integrated photonic frequency combs. Relying on Kerr nonlinear microresonators operated below and above threshold, we demonstrate the generation of discrete entangled photon pairs as well as bright multipartite quantum states involving many spectral modes. We show how frequency multiplexing enables both multi-user quantum communication and enhanced data rates, while remaining fully compatible with integrated photonic circuits. Beyond bipartite entanglement, we report direct signatures of genuine multipartite quantum correlations in bright frequency combs. These results highlight integrated photonics as a versatile and scalable platform for multimode quantum technologies in communication, sensing, and metrology.

Recent advances in high-dimensional quantum frequency combs

Kai-Chi Chang, Xiang Cheng, Murat Can Sarihan +1 more

High-dimensional entanglement in qudit states offers a promising pathway towards the realization of practical, large-scale quantum systems that are highly controllable. These systems can be leveraged for various applications, including advanced quantum information processing, secure communications, computation, and metrology. In this context, quantum frequency combs have a crucial role as they inherently support multiple modes in both temporal and frequency domains, while preserving a single spatial mode. The multiple temporal and frequency modes of quantum frequency combs facilitate the generation, characterization, and control of high-dimensional time-frequency entanglement in extensive quantum systems. In this review article, we provide an overview of recent technological advancements in high-dimensional energy-time entangled quantum frequency combs. We explore how these time-frequency qudits, achieved using scalable telecommunications-wavelength components, can empower the creation of large-scale quantum states. Advances in quantum frequency combs can unlock new capabilities and versatility for promising developments in quantum science and technology.

Long-range entanglement and quantum correlations in a multi-frequency comb system

Sahil Pontula, Debasmita Banerjee, Marin Soljacic +1 more

Frequency combs are multimode photonic systems that underlie countless precision sensing and metrology applications. Since their invention over two decades ago, numerous efforts have pushed frequency combs to broader bandwidths and more stable operation. More recently, quantum squeezing and entanglement have been explored in single frequency comb systems for quantum advantages in sensing and signal multiplexing. However, the production of quantum light across multiple frequency combs remains unexplored. In this work, we theoretically explore a mechanism that generates a series of nonlinearly coupled frequency combs through cascaded three-wave upconversion and downconversion processes mediated by a single idler comb. We show how this system generates inter- and intracomb two-mode squeezing and entanglement spanning a very large spectral range, from ultraviolet to mid-IR frequencies. Finally, we show how this system can be engineered to produce on-demand multimode quantum light through covariance matrix optimization. Our findings could enable tunable broadband ghost spectroscopy protocols, squeezing-enhanced pump-probe measurements, and broadband entanglement between spectrally-multiplexed quanta of information.
