Abstract

In this paper, energy-efficient secure communications via untrusted two-way relaying are investigated considering physical layer security to prevent the relays from intercepting the confidential information of users. The performance metric of secure energy efficiency (EE), defined as the ratio of the secrecy sum rate to the total power consumption, is maximized by jointly optimizing power allocation for all nodes, with the constraints of the maximum allowed power and the minimum target secrecy rate. To deal with this intractable nonconvex optimization problem, some optimization methods termed as fractional programming, alternate optimization, penalty function method, and difference of convex functions programming, are jointly applied to address a solution scheme with comparatively lower complexity. With these above-mentioned optimization methods, the primal problem is transformed into simple subproblems hierarchically so as to adopt the corresponding optimization algorithm. By simulations, the achievable secure EE, the secrecy sum rate and the total transmission power of the proposed scheme are compared with those of secrecy sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme can improve secure EE remarkably yet at the cost of secrecy sum rate loss. This fact also reveals the inherent tradeoff between energy and security.

Secure and Energy-Efficient Beamforming for MIMO Two-way Untrusted Relay Systems

Shuangrui Zhao, Jia Liu, Yulong Shen +2 more

In this paper, we investigate energy-efficient secure communications in an untrusted two-way relay network, where two source nodes exchange messages via an untrusted relay. Considering both security threats and energy limitation, the performance metric secure energy efficiency is defined as the ratio of the secrecy sum rate to the total power consumption. Our objective is to maximize the secure energy efficiency by jointly designing the source and relay beamformers. We first derive the expression of secure energy efficiency under a general beamforming configuration. Then, an iterative algorithm based on the techniques of alternate optimization, fractional programming, barrier function method and semi-definite programming, is proposed to find the optimal solutions of the source and relay beamformers. Our analysis shows that the proposed scheme can not only solve the problem of secure energy efficiency maximization but also be applicable for solving the problem of secrecy sum rate maximization. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a good gain in terms of secure energy efficiency.

Energy Efficient Secure Communication Over Decode-and-Forward Relay Channels

Dong Wang, Bo Bob Bai, Wei Chen +1 more

In this paper, we raise the concern on energy-efficient secure communication over a decode-and-forward relay network with potential eavesdroppers. Our objective is maximizing the secure energy efficiency (EE), which is defined as the ratio of secrecy rate to total power, subject to the given individual power, relay decoding rate, and target secrecy rate constraints. The problem is formulated as a unified mixed integer nonlinear optimization adapting to different assumptions of channel state information (CSI). To deal with this combinatorial optimization, a suboptimal solution scheme is developed upon some mathematical methods as decoupling of mixed integer programming, fractional programming, dual decomposition, and difference of convex functions programming. The core of the scheme is to transform the primal problem into simple subproblems step by step, and then convex programming can be exploited finally. The proposed scheme for the case with statistical eavesdropper's CSI, may be conditionally extended to the scenario with full CSI in which a local optimal solution may be obtained in certain cases. Finally, the performance and achievable secure EE of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated by simulations where the tradeoff between secure EE and secrecy rate is also revealed.

Secure and Energy-Efficient Precoding for MIMO Two-Way Untrusted Relay Systems

Shuangrui Zhao, Jia Liu, Yulong Shen +2 more

This paper focuses on the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relay system with an untrusted relay and investigates its secure and energy-efficient precoding design issue based on the physical layer security technology. We first provide theoretical modeling for the index of secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) and formulate the optimal precoding design for SEE maximization (SEEM) as a high-dimensional non-convex programming problem. By exploring the techniques like fractional programming, alternate optimization and semi-definite programming, we then develop a hierarchical theoretical framework to solve the SEEM problem and thus to identify the optimal precoding designs for the source and relay. Furthermore, we demonstrate the proposed theoretical framework is also applicable to the problem of precoding design for secrecy sum rate maximization. Finally, with the help of generalized singular value decomposition, we propose a sub-optimal relay precoding design scheme with significantly lower computational complexity. Extensive numerical results provided in the paper indicate that the proposed schemes can remarkably improve the SEE performance in MIMO two-way untrusted relay systems.

Secure Energy Efficiency Maximization for Untrusted Wireless-Powered Full-Duplex Relay Networks Under Nonlinear Energy Harvesting

Siyang Xu, Xin Song

In this article, we raise the concern on secure energy efficiency (SEE) over the wireless-powered untrusted relay networks with nonlinear energy harvesting (EH). To achieve data confidentiality and secrecy performance enhancement concurrently, the untrusted relay can enable simultaneous energy signal reception and confidential information forwarding during the second phase, where no dedicated energy transmission phase or relaying signal splitting is needed for the energy supply. In particular, with the help of destination jamming, the relay can also harvest energy from source signal and jamming signal during the first phase, which is different from conventional relaying protocol that only harvests energy from source and recycled energy. Considering the nonlinear EH efficiency, our objective is to maximize the SEE through piecewise region selection and power allocation. To address this intractable nonconvex problem, a two-layer algorithm based on optimization decoupling, fractional programming, Lagrange dual decomposition and difference of convex functions (DC) programming is proposed. The core idea of the proposed algorithm is to convert the primary problem into simple subproblems by sequentially exploiting the above-mentioned optimization methods. Simulation results reveal the superior secrecy performance of the proposed scheme. The proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal solutions with faster convergence rate.

On Secure Communication Using RF Energy Harvesting Two-Way Untrusted Relay

Vipul Gupta, Sanket S. Kalamkar, Adrish Banerjee

We focus on a scenario where two wireless source nodes wish to exchange confidential information via an RF energy harvesting untrusted two-way relay. Despite its cooperation in forwarding the information, the relay is considered untrusted out of the concern that it might attempt to decode the confidential information that is being relayed. To discourage the eavesdropping intention of the relay, we use a friendly jammer. Under the total power constraint, to maximize the sum-secrecy rate, we allocate the power among the sources and the jammer optimally and calculate the optimal power splitting ratio to balance between the energy harvesting and the information processing at the relay. We further examine the effect of imperfect channel state information at both sources on the sum- secrecy rate. Numerical results highlight the role of the jammer in achieving the secure communication under channel estimation errors. We have shown that, as the channel estimation error on any of the channels increases, the power allocated to the jammer decreases to abate the interference caused to the confidential information reception due to the imperfect cancellation of jammer's signal.

Optimized secure and energy-efficient transmission in an untrusted relay network

Tamer Mekkawy, Rugui Yao, Fei Xu +1 more

In this paper, a near Optimum Power Allocation (OPA) for a cooperative jamming relay network is proposed, by using physical layer security to protect the user's messages from relay's interception. The network uses Amplify and Forward (AF) relay to enlarge the coverage area, however the relay is untrusted. By defining secure Energy Efficiency (EE) as the ratio of the instantaneous secrecy rate to the total power consumption to measure the performance of the network. To simplify such optimization problem, an approximated OPA on the basis of Taylor expansion is derived. The numerical results show that the approximated OPA error does not exceed 1% even in the worst case, which verifies the correctness and lower complexity of the proposed algorithm.
