We describe a white-light cavity scheme based on a cavity quantum electrodynamics system that consists of multiple three-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and coherently driven by a free-space, circularly polarized field. A linearly polarized field is coupled into the cavity mode and its two circular components induce coherent Raman transitions through the normal modes of the coupled atom-cavity system. One circular component of the cavity field experiences anomalous dispersion which enables broadband light transmission through the cavity. We present the experimental demonstration of the broadband light transmission through an optical cavity coupled to cold Rb atoms.

Demonstration of a Tunable-Bandwidth White-Light Interferometer Using Anomalous Dispersion in Atomic Vapor

G. S. Pati, M. Salit, K. Salit +1 more

Recently, the design of a white-light cavity has been proposed using negative dispersion in an intracavity medium to make the cavity resonate over a large range of frequencies and still maintain a high cavity buildup. This Letter presents the first demonstration of this effect in a free-space cavity. The negative dispersion of the intracavity medium is caused by bifrequency Raman gain in an atomic vapor cell. A significantly broad cavity response over a bandwidth greater than 20 MHz has been observed. A key application of this device would be in enhancing the sensitivity-bandwidth product of the next generation gravitational wave detectors that make use of the so-called signal-recycling mirror.

White-light cavity with multiple broad bands based on tunable negative dispersion in a multi-level system

Yanan Li, Yu-Yuan Chen, Ren-Gang Wan

Abstract We propose a scheme for the generation of a white-light cavity with multiple broad frequency bands by using an incoherent pumped multi-level atomic system. Owing to the destructive quantum interference induced by the coherent coupling fields, multiple negative dispersion regions with a broadband characteristic can be achieved within the transparency windows, which result from resonant gain suppression. By simply adjusting the control fields, the negative material dispersion compensates the normal dispersion of cavity in the transparency regions, so we can obtain a white-light cavity with multiple wide frequency bands. Moreover, the cavity linewidth depends explicitly on the incoherent pumping rate and gas density. When the system interacts with more coherent coupling fields, we anticipate that more bands will be generated in the cavity transmission spectrum. The proposed scheme can find applications in many fields, such as a wide-band optical switch for multiple signals.

Slow and fast light propagation inside an optical cavity containing coherent atoms

Haibin Wu, Min Xiao

By balancing the steep linear and nonlinear dispersions of an intracavity electromagnetically induced transparency medium, the cavity transmission spectra can be significantly modified and controlled. As the cavity input intensity increases, the cavity linewidth changes from far below to above the empty cavity linewidth, corresponding to the photon propagation in the cavity from "subluminal" to "superluminal", respectively. A "white-light cavity" condition has been achieved under certain experimental conditions.
