Abstract

We propose a scheme to realize storage and retrieval of two-component optical soliton in a coherent atomic system. The system under consideration is a cold, lifetime-broadened four-level atomic gas with a tripod configuration working at the condition of double electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that due to the existence of two dark states, the optical absorption of the probe pulse can be largely reduced. In addition, the two orthogonal polarization components of the probe pulse with a form of vector optical soliton cannot only be slowed down substantially but also be stored and retrieved robustly by switching a control laser field off and on. We also show that it is possible to achieve a memory of $N$-component optical soliton by using the $N$ dark states in a $(N+1)$-pod system $(N>2)$. The results reported here may have promise in applications for light information processing in a weak nonlinear regime.

Storage and retrieval of ultraslow optical solitons in coherent atomic system

Zhengyang Bai, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the propagation of intense probe pulses in a lifetime broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. We find that ultraslow optical solitons formed by a balance between dispersion and nonlinearity can be stored and retrieved in the system by switching off and on a control field.Such pulses are robust during storage and retrieval, and hence may have potential applications in optical and quantum information processing.

Slow-light soliton beam splitters

Chong Shou, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to realize slow-light soliton beam splitters by using a tripod-type four-level atomic system. We show that optical solitons, which have ultraslow propagation velocity and ultralow generation power, can be generated in the system via electromagnetically induced transparency and can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and fidelity. In particular, a nonlinear beam splitter that splits one optical soliton into two or more ones can be obtained by switching on and off of two or more control laser fields subsequently. The results reported here open a route not only for active manipulation of nonlinear optical pulses in multistate quantum systems but also for promising applications in optical information processing and transmission.

Ultraslow optical solitons and their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type atomic system

Yang Chen, Zhengyang Bai, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain stable nonlinear optical pulses and realize their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type three-level atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency. Based on Maxwell-Bloch equations we derive a nonlinear equation governing the evolution of probe field envelope, and show that optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity and extremely low generation power can be created in the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such ultraslow optical solitons can be stored and retrieved by switching off and on a control field. Due to the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, the ultraslow optical solitons are robust during propagation, and hence their storage and retrieval are more desirable than that of linear optical pulses. This raises the possibility of realizing the storage and retrieval of light and quantum information by using solitonic pulses.

Quantum memory of single-photon polarization qubits via double electromagnetically induced transparency

Qi Zhang, Guoxiang Huang

We present a theoretical investigation on the quantum memory of photonic polarization qubits via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The system we consider is a tripod-shaped four-level atomic system working under the condition of a double EIT, by which the storage and retrieval of a single-photon polarization qubit are implemented through the switching off and on of a control laser field, and the storage efficiency and the quantum-state fidelity for qubit memory are both calculated. We show that the optimal optical depth for acquiring the maximum efficiency and maximum fidelity of the qubit memory can be obtained simultaneously, which can be further improved by suppressing the optical absorption and dispersion via the choice of the time duration of the input qubit pulse and the amplitude of the control field. We also carry out a calculation on the quantum memory of a single-photon qudit by considering a multipod-shaped atomic-level configuration. The results reported here are useful for understanding the quantum transmission property of slow lights with multiple components and helpful for experimental realizations of high-quality memory of photonic qubits and qudits.

Storage, Splitting, and Routing of Optical Peregrine Solitons in a Coherent Atomic System

Chong Shou, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to realize the storage and retrieval of optical Peregrine solitons in a coherent atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that optical Peregrine solitons with very small propagation loss, ultraslow motional velocity, and extremely low generation power can be created in the system via EIT. We also show that such solitons can be stored, retrieved, split, and routed with high efficiency and fidelity through the manipulation of control laser fields. The results reported here are useful for the active control of optical Peregrine solitons and promising for applications in optical information processing and transmission.

Storage and retrieval of slow-light dark solitons

Chong Shou, Guoxiang Huang

We show that stable slow-light dark solitons with finite continuous-wave background can be generated in a Λ -type atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We also show that such dark solitons can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and fidelity. Moreover, an optical routing of them can be realized via EIT in the system with a double- Λ -type level configuration.
