Biphoton manipulation with a fiber-based pulse shaper

Joseph M. Lukens, Amir Dezfooliyan, Carsten Langrock +3 more

We demonstrate spectral shaping of entangled photons in the telecom band with a programmable, fiber-based optical filter. The fine-resolution spectral control permits implementation of length-40 Hadamard codes, through which we are able to verify frequency anticorrelation with a 20-fold increase in total counts over that permitted by the equivalent pair of monochromators at the same input flux. By programming the complex spectral transmission function corresponding to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we also construct variations on Franson interferometers that are free from mechanical instabilities, demonstrating spectral phase independence in the slow-detector limit, in which all temporal features are unobservable. Our configuration furnishes a single, compact arrangement for manipulating telecom biphotons and characterizing their quality.

Fumihiko Kannari, Daisuke Fujishima, Masahiro Takeoka +3 more

A novel fiber-based scheme for generating quadrature entanglement between a desired pair of frequency bands is proposed. The scheme is based on a nonlinear fiber, a spectral pulse shaper, and an adaptive feedback loop.

On-chip pulse shaping of entangled photons

Kaiyi Wu, Lucas M. Cohen, Karthik V. Myilswamy +4 more

The miniaturization of optical systems via integrated photonics is critical to the ultimate scalability and performance of photonic quantum processors, yet many longstanding optical signal processing capabilities—such as Fourier-transform pulse shaping—remain unrealized on chip. In this work, we demonstrate on-chip spectral shaping of entangled photons using a multichannel microring-resonator-based silicon photonic pulse shaper. Achieving line-by-line phase control on a 3 GHz grid for two frequency-bin-entangled qudits, the pulse shaper's fine spectral resolution enables control of nanosecond-scale temporal features, which are observed by direct coincidence detection of biphoton correlation functions that show excellent agreement with theory. This work marks a demonstration of biphoton pulse shaping using an integrated spectral shaper and holds significant promise for applications in photonic quantum information processing.

Spectral polarization and spectral phase control of time-energy entangled photons

Barak Dayan, Yaron Bromberg, I. Afek +1 more

We demonstrate a scheme to spectrally manipulate a collinear, continuous stream of time and energy entangled photons to generate beamlike, bandwidth-limited fluxes of polarization-entangled photons with nearly degenerate wavelengths. Utilizing an ultrashort-pulse shaper to control the spectral phase and polarization of the photon pairs, we tailor the shape of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference pattern, demonstrating the rules that govern the dependence of this interference pattern on the spectral phases of the photons. We then use the pulse shaper to generate all four polarization Bell states. The singlet state generated by this scheme forms a very robust decoherence-free subspace, extremely suitable for long-distance fiber-optics-based quantum communication.

Generation and distribution of quantum entanglement in the telecom band with standard optical fiber

X. Li, Paul L. Voss, Jay E. Sharping +2 more

Polarization entangled photon pairs are produced by pumping the nonlinear-fiber Sagnac interferometer with orthogonally-polarized pulses. Parametrically scattered signal-idler photons yield biphoton interference with visibility greater than 95% in coincidence. When signal-idler photon pairs are physically propagated over 25 km of standard optical fiber, the quantum correlation is preserved.
