Criterion for quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects

Jiaming Zhang, Jun Jing, Li‐Gang Wang +1 more

In this work, we study the decay behavior of a two-level system under the competing influence of a dissipative environment and repetitive measurements. The sign of the second derivative of the environmental spectral density function with respect to the system transition frequency is found to be a sufficient condition to distinguish between the quantum Zeno (negative) and the anti-Zeno (positive) effects raised by the measurements. We check our criterion for practical measurement intervals, which are larger than the conceptual Zeno time, in various environments. In particular, with the Lorentzian spectrum, the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno phenomena are found to emerge respectively in the near-resonant and off-resonant cases. For the interacting spectra of hydrogenlike atoms, the quantum Zeno effect usually occurs and the anti-Zeno effect can rarely occur unless the transition frequency is close to the cut-off frequency. With a power-law spectrum, we find that sub-Ohmic and super-Ohmic environments lead to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, respectively.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on the entanglement dynamics of qubits dissipating into a common and non-Markovian environment

Alireza Nourmandipour, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly, M. A. Bolorizadeh

We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on pairwise entanglement dynamics of a collective of noninteracting qubits which have been initially prepared in a Werner state and are off-resonantly coupled to a common and non-Markovian environment. We obtain the analytical expression of the concurrence in the absence and presence of the nonselective measurements. In particular, we express our results in the strong and weak coupling regimes and examine the role of the system size and the effect of the detuning from the cavity field frequency on the temporal behavior of the pairwise entanglement. We show that the detuning parameter has a positive role in protection of entanglement in the absence of the measurement for the weak coupling regime. We find that for the values of detuning parameter less than the cavity damping rate, the quantum Zeno effect is always dominant, while for values greater than the cavity damping rate, both Zeno and anti-Zeno effects can occur, depending on the measurement intervals. We also find that the anti-Zeno effect can occur in the pairwise entanglement dynamics in the absence and presence of the detuning in the strong coupling regime.

Controllable decay in an optical waveguide system

Guijuan Zhao, Ting Zhao, Huifu Xiao +3 more

The optical waveguide arrays can be employed to simulate the unstable quantum systems when the light propagates in them, which can present the optical Zeno and anti-Zeno effects. In this paper, we propose the scheme of periodic modulation of the coupling coefficient based on the coupling between the straight and cosine bend optical waveguides, which can realize the controllable optical Zeno and anti-Zeno effects. Based on the special decay law, the decay of light intensity in the straight waveguide can be freely controlled by selecting the appropriate observation positions.
