Reduced Density Matrix Cumulants: The Combinatorics of Size-Consistency and Generalized Normal Ordering

Jonathon P. Misiewicz, Justin M. Turney, Henry F. Schaefer

Reduced density matrix cumulants play key roles in the theory of both reduced density matrices and multiconfigurational normal ordering. We present a new, simpler generating function for reduced density matrix cumulants that is formally identical with equating the coupled cluster and configuration interaction ansätze. This is shown to be a general mechanism to convert between a multiplicatively separable quantity and an additively separable quantity, as defined by a set of axioms. It is shown that both the cumulants of probability theory and the reduced density matrices are entirely combinatorial constructions, where the differences can be associated with changes in the notion of "multiplicative separability" for expectation values of random variables compared to reduced density matrices. We compare our generating function to that of previous works and criticize previous claims of probabilistic significance of the reduced density matrix cumulants. Finally, we present a simple proof of the generalized normal ordering formalism to explore the role of reduced density matrix cumulants therein. While the formalism can be used without cumulants, the combinatorial structure of expressing RDMs in terms of cumulants is the same combinatorial structure on cumulants that allows for a simple extended generalized Wick's theorem.

Relativistic reduced density matrix functional theory

Mauricio Rodríguez‐Mayorga, Klaas J. H. Giesbertz, Lucas Visscher

As a new approach to efficiently describe correlation effects in the relativistic quantum world we propose to consider reduced density matrix functional theory, where the key quantity is the first-order reduced density matrix (1-RDM). In this work, we first introduce the theoretical foundations to extend the applicability of this theory to the relativistic domain. Then, using the so-called no-pair (np) approximation, we arrive at an approximate treatment of the relativistic effects by focusing on electronic wavefunctions and neglecting explicit contributions from positrons. Within the np approximation the theory becomes similar to the nonrelativistic case, with as unknown only the functional that describes the electron-electron interactions in terms of the 1-RDM. This requires the construction of functional approximations, and we therefore also present the relativistic versions of some common RDMFT approximations that are used in the nonrelativistic context and discuss their properties.

Reduced density-matrix functionals from many-particle theory

Robert Schade, Ebad Kamil, Peter E. Blöchl

In materials with strong electron correlation the proper treatment of local atomic physics described by orbital occupations is crucial. Reduced density-matrix functional theory is a natural extension of density functional theory for systems that are dominated by orbital physics. We review the current state of reduced density-matrix functional theory (RDMFT). For atomic structure relaxations or ab-initio molecular dynamics the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) possesses a number of disadvantages, like the cumbersome evaluation of forces. We therefore describe a method, DFT+RDMFT, that combines many-particle effects based on reduced density-matrix functional theory with a density functional-like framework. A recent development is the construction of density-matrix functionals directly from many-particle theory such as methods from quantum chemistry or many-particle Green’s functions. We present the underlying exact theorems and describe current progress towards quantitative functionals.
