Abstract

We report the generation of a photon-number entangled state in which detection of ancillary photons heralds the generation of the entangled state as well as its phase. Our scheme can operate with separable input states.

We propose and demonstrate a scheme in which ancillary photons for heralding a photon-number entangled state can control the state to be heralded. This scheme can herald photon-number entangled states having arbitrary number of photons.

Heralded generation of entanglement with photons

Imogen Forbes, Farzad Ghafari, Edward C. R. Deacon +6 more

Entangled states of photons form the backbone of many quantum technologies. Due to the lack of effective photon-photon interactions, the generation of these states is typically probabilistic. In the prevailing but fundamentally limited generation technique, known as postselection, the target photons are measured destructively in the generation process. By contrast, in the alternative approach-heralded state generation-the successful creation of a desired state is verified by the detection of ancillary photons. Heralded state generation is superior to postselection in several critical ways: it enables free usage of the prepared states, allows for the success probability to be arbitrarily increased via multiplexing, and provides a scalable route to quantum information processing using photons. Here, we review theoretical proposals and experimental realisations of heralded entangled photonic state generation, as well as the impact of realistic experimental errors. We then discuss the wide-ranging applications of these states for quantum technologies, including resource states in linear optical quantum computing, entanglement swapping for repeater networks, fundamental physics, and quantum metrology.

No-go theorems for photon state transformations in quantum linear optics

Pablo V. Parellada, Vicent Gimeno, Julio José Moyano‐Fernández +1 more

We give a necessary condition for photon state transformations in linear optical setups preserving the total number of photons. From an analysis of the algebra describing the quantum evolution, we find a conserved quantity that appears in all allowed optical transformations. We comment some examples and numerical applications, with example code, and give three general no-go results. These include (i) the impossibility of deterministic transformations which redistribute the photons from one to two different modes, (ii) a proof that it is impossible to generate a perfect Bell state in heralded schemes with a separable input for any number of ancillary photons and modes and a fixed herald and (iii) a restriction for the conversion between different types of entanglement (converting GHZ to W states). These tools and results can help in the design of experiments for optical quantum state generation.

Heralded entangled state generation enhanced by photon addition and subtraction

Yun-Long Cao, Xiao-Ye Xu, Chuan-Feng Li +1 more

We propose a heralded entanglement generation scheme based on Gaussian sources enhanced by photon addition and subtraction operations. By combining single-mode squeezing, linear interferometers, and conditional photon-number measurements on ancillary modes, our model can probabilistically generate dual-rail encoded Bell, GHZ, and W states. We systematically optimize the squeezing parameters and interferometer settings to maximize both the heralding success probability and the fidelity with the target states. Our results show that photon addition and subtraction significantly enhance the non-classicality of the output states and improve generation performance, while maintaining computational efficiency comparable to single-photon source models. We further analyze the robustness of the scheme under parameter perturbations and find that its performance remains stable under realistic experimental imperfections. This work provides a versatile and experimentally feasible framework for scalable heralded entanglement generation using Gaussian resources with non-Gaussian operations.

Phase and amplitude controlled heralding of N00N states

Young-Sik Ra, Hyang‐Tag Lim, Joo-Eon Oh +1 more

Entangled photons, an essential resource in quantum technology, are mostly generated in spontaneous processes, making it impossible to know if the quantum state is available for use; giving only a posteriori knowledge of the quantum state via destructive photon detection processes. There are schemes for heralding the generation of entangled photons but the heralding schemes developed to date only inform the generation of a predetermined quantum state with no capability of state control. Here, we report the phase and (probability-) amplitude controlled heralding, i.e., complete quantum state heralding, of multiphoton entangled states or N00N states. Since the phase and amplitude controls are inseparably integrated into the heralding mechanism, our scheme enables generation of N00N states with arbitrary phases and amplitudes. Such a flexible heralding scheme is expected to play important roles in various photonic quantum information applications.
