Abstract

A consequent tendency toward high-performance quantum information processing is to develop the fully integrated photonic chip. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of entangled photons based on reconfigurable lithium-niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing a periodically poled structure into the waveguide circuits, two individual photon-pair sources with a controllable electro-optic phase shift are produced within a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9±0.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. The photon flux reaches ∼1.4×10(7) pairs nm-1 mW-1. The whole chip is designed to contain nine similar units to produce identical photon pairs spanning the telecom C and L band by the flexible engineering of nonlinearity. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves the way to fully integrated quantum technologies.

Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

Programmable lithium niobate photonic chip for near-ideal path entanglement and frequency entanglement

Ping Xu, Jia-Chen Duan, Yu Sun +3 more

Abstract Quantum photonic chip is a powerful platform to prepare multi-functional quantum light sources and actualize complex quantum information processing for its advantages of integration, stability, mass production, and reconfigurability. In this work, we design and fabricate a lithium niobate quantum photonic chip, consisting of tandem multi-poling structures, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and electro-optic modulation, to produce multiple near-ideal quantum light sources including anti-bunching, path and frequency entangled photon pairs. The anti-bunching photon pairs exhibit off-chip Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibilities above 99%. The fidelities of both frequency and path entanglement exceed 0.99. Meanwhile, all the quantum states hold a wide wavelength tuning range and high coupling efficiency from the chip. Our work paves the way for the development of programmable multi-functional quantum light sources and further promoting various quantum information tasks and enriching the architectures of on-chip quantum information processing.

Versatile on-chip reconfigurable two-photon interference platforms using thin-film lithium niobate

Minho Choi, Changhyun Kim, Sunghyun Moon +6 more

Integrated quantum photonic technologies require scalable devices with high-visibility quantum interference. Recent studies have demonstrated that lithium niobate on insulator enables efficient nonlinear interactions, via quasi-phase matching in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides. However, the on-chip control of two-photon interference utilizing path entanglement remains limited. In this study, we demonstrate on-chip generation of single-photon sources via quantum interference using path-entangled N00N states in two ways. Using the basic structure of a reverse Hong–Ou–Mandel (RHOM) configuration, we directly observe high on-chip visibility of quantum interference. We achieve a visibility of 97.7% ± 1.1% using a dual-PPLN waveguide as the basic RHOM configuration. To improve the compactness, efficiency, and stability of on-chip operation, we further incorporate a PPLN ring resonator with a Sagnac loop. This allows counter-propagating paths to share a single periodically poled waveguide, achieving a visibility of 84.4% ± 1.6%. These results demonstrate that lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI)-based quantum photonic systems provide a robust foundation for the development of future integrated quantum technologies.

Programmable Bell state generation in an integrated thin film lithium niobate circuit

Andreas Maeder, Robert J. Chapman, Alessandra Sabatti +3 more

Abstract Entanglement is central to quantum technologies such as cryptography, sensing, and computing. Photon pairs generated via nonlinear optical processes are excellent for preparing entangled states due to their long coherence times and compatibility with fiber optic networks. Steady progress in nanofabrication has positioned lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) as a leading platform for monolithic integration of photon pair sources into optical circuits, leveraging its strong second-order nonlinearity. Here, we present a reconfigurable photonic integrated circuit on LNOI, which combines two on-chip photon pair sources with programmable interferometers, enabling the generation of entangled states. The photon pair sources achieve a source brightness of 26 MHz nm −1 mW −1 while maintaining a coincidence-to-accidental ratio above 100. We successfully interfere the two sources with 99.0 ± 0.7% visibility, demonstrating the indistinguishability required for producing entanglement on-chip. We show the preparation of any of the maximally entangled Bell states with fidelity above 90% verified by quantum state tomography. These results establish LNOI as a compelling, scalable platform to explore integrated quantum photonic technologies enabled by high-brightness sources of entangled quantum states.

On-chip tunable quantum interference in a lithium niobate-on-insulator photonic integrated circuit

Andreas Maeder, Giovanni Finco, Fabian Kaufmann +4 more

Abstract Programmable interferometric circuits are at the heart of integrated quantum photonic processors. While the lithium niobate-on-insulator platform has the potential to advance integrated quantum photonics due to its strong nonlinearity and tight mode confinement, the demonstration of reconfigurable two-photon interference has not yet been achieved. Here, we design, fabricate and characterize the building block of such interferometric networks in the form of a 2 × 2 Mach–Zehnder Interferometer. We use a thermo-optic phase shifter to achieve stable performance with a power consumption of P π = 44.4 mW and sub-microsecond switching times. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our device for quantum applications by measuring single-photon routing with up to 34 dB extinction ratio. We show Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with fully tunable visibilities reaching a maximum value of 97.4 ± 1.0 % . As part of large scale quantum photonic circuits, this building block will facilitate reconfigurable and tunable photonic processing units integrated alongside non-classical light sources.

Versatile integrated source of entangled photons at telecom wavelength in femtosecond-laser-written circuits (Conference Presentation)

Simone Atzeni, Giacomo Corrielli, Andrea Crespi +7 more

Entangled photons generation is an interesting field of research, since progress in this area will directly affect the development of photonic quantum technologies, including quantum computing, simulation and sensing. Several methods have been sifted to increase the performances of entangled photon sources and the integrated optics approach represents a promising strategy. In particular, integrated waveguide sources represent a robust tool, thanks to their stability and the enhancement of nonlinear light-crystal interaction provided by waveguide field confinement. Here, we show the versatility of a hybrid approach, realizing an integrated optical source for the generation of entangled photon-pairs at telecom wavelength. The nonlinear active medium used is lithium niobate, while the routing and manipulation of the generated signal is performed in aluminum-borosilicate glass photonic circuits. The system is composed of three cascaded devices. First, a balanced directional coupler at the fundamental wavelength equally splits the pump in the lithium niobate waveguides, which generate single-photon pairs through type 0 spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. A third chip, encompassing directional couplers and waveplates, closes the interferometer and recombines the generated photons, thus giving access to different quantum states of light: path-entangled or polarization-entangled states. A thermal phase shifter, which controls the relative phase between the interferometer arms, gives an additional degree of freedom for engineering the output state of the presented photon pairs source. All these components are entirely fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining, a direct and very versatile technique that allows to process different kind of materials and realize high quality optical circuits.
