Abstract

We have experimentally observed optical multistability (OM) in an optical ring cavity containing three-level Λ-type Doppler-broadened rubidium atoms. The shape of the OM curve can be significantly modified by changing the power of the control laser field. An all-optical multistate switching or coding element is realized and flexibly controlled by adding a pulse sequence to the input (probe) intensity.

Controlling optical bistability, multistability and all-optical switching through multi-photon excitation process

Suman Garain, Suman Mondal, Kalan Mal +2 more

Abstract We present a theoretical study on optical bistability (OB), optical multistability (OM) and tunable all-optical switching in a four-level cascade type atomic system. The density matrix formalism is used to find out the response of the probe laser field. We explore OB and OM under unidirectional optical ring cavity configuration. A comparison between the effects of electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption windows on OB is presented. The threshold of OB and the hysteresis width can be tuned effectively by adjusting the applied coherent fields. A transition from OB to OM and vice-versa can be easily achieved by tuning the field parameters and the atomic cooperation parameter. Dynamic control of the probe laser propagating through the medium has been investigated. We also demonstrate conversion of a continuous wave input probe field into output switched pulse. The ON/OFF time of the switched probe pulse can also be controlled by tuning the field parameters.

Optical Multistability in Three-Level Atoms inside an Optical Ring Cavity

Amitabh Joshi, Min Xiao

Optical multistability in an optical ring cavity filled with a collection of three-level Lambda-type rubidium atoms has been experimentally demonstrated. The observed multistability is very sensitive to the induced atomic coherence in the system and can evolve from a normal bistable behavior with the change of the coupling field as well as the atomic number density. The underlying mechanism for the formation of such multistability is also discussed.

Synchronous control of dual-channel all-optical multistate switching

Jiteng Sheng, Junfeng Wang, Min Xiao

We have experimentally observed optical multistabilities (OMs) simultaneously on both the signal and generated Stokes fields in an optical ring cavity with a coherently prepared multilevel atomic medium. The two observed OMs, which are governed by different physical processes, are coupled via the multilevel atomic medium and exhibit similar threshold behaviors. By modulating the cavity input (signal) field with positive or negative pulses, dual-channel all-optical multistate switching has been realized and synchronously controlled, which can be useful for increasing communication and computation capacities.

Dynamic all-optical memory switching based on atomic optical bistable behavior in a three level Λ-type atomic system

Haiqiang He, Bixuan Fan, Min Xie

Abstract We theoretically investigate the atomic optical bistability (AOB) in a three-level Λ-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The role of the intensity or detuning of the control field on AOB is explored, and results show that absorption, dispersion, and nonlinearity can be modified significantly by the control field due to quantum coherence and interference in multilevel atomic systems. Thus, tuning the intensity or detuning of the control field can manipulate the switch-up and switch-down thresholds, as well as the area of the bistable hysteresis loop. According to the controllability of AOB, we design various schemes to realize dynamical all-optical switching between the high and low outputs of two bistable curves for a fixed cavity input. In addition, dynamical all-optical memory switching can be implemented by adding a pulse sequence for the intensity or detuning of the control field. For appropriate parameters, such as the cooperative coefficient, the extinction ratio of the switching can be improved dramatically.

Steady-State Switching and Dispersion/Absorption Spectroscopy of Multistate Atoms Inside an Optical Ring Cavity

Jiteng Sheng

This thesis mainly focuses on the experimental investigations of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) related phenomena in various systems involving multilevel atoms inside an optical ring cavity. Semiclassical methods, e.g. density-matrix equations, are used through out this thesis to simulate the experimental results. First, the cavity transmission spectrum can be significantly modified when multilevel atoms are placed inside an optical ring cavity. Such coupled atom-cavity systems are well explained by the intracavity dispersion/absorption properties. Specifically, three-level lambda-type, four-level N-type and double-lambda-type atoms inside an optical ring cavity are investigated by examining their cavity transmission spectra. Second, optical multistability (OM) has been demonstrated with EIT atoms inside an optical ring cavity. Such OM has been utilized to realize a controllable optical multistate switch, which can be modeled as a triple-well system. Third, self-Kerr nonlinearities of multilevel atoms are measured in an optical ring cavity by scanning the cavity length. Fourth, bright Stokes and anti-Stokes fields are generated simultaneously in a doubly-resonant atomic optical parametric oscillator (AOPO). In addition, vacuum-induced absorption and noise correlations are studied in the AOPO system. Last, a theoretical model is proposed to realize parity-time (PT) symmetry in a four-level N-type atomic system by spatially modifying the complex refractive index in free space. Moreover, the experimental progress is made to observe discrete diffraction pattern in an optically induced lattice by interfering with plane waves in a coherent atomic medium.
