Keeping a Physical Quantum Bit Alive

Abstract

A general strategy to maintain the coherence of a quantum bit is proposed. The analytical result is derived rigorously. It is based on an optimized pulse sequence for dynamic decoupling which turns out to be very efficient, in particular for strong couplings to the environment.

Keeping a Quantum Bit Alive by Optimized π -Pulse Sequences

Götz Silvester Uhrig

A general strategy to maintain the coherence of a quantum bit is proposed. The analytical result is derived rigorously including all memory and backaction effects. It is based on an optimized pi-pulse sequence for dynamic decoupling extending the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill cycle. The optimized sequence is very efficient, in particular, for strong couplings to the environment.

Coherence of a dynamically decoupled single neutral atom

Chang Hoong Chow, Boon Long Ng, Christian Kurtsiefer

Long qubit coherence and efficient atom-photon coupling are essential for advanced applications in quantum communication. One technique to maintain coherence is dynamical decoupling (DD) [1] , [2] , where a periodic sequence of refocusing pulses is employed to reduce the interaction of the system with the environment.

Near-Optimal Dynamical Decoupling of a Qubit

Jacob R. West, Bryan H. Fong, Daniel A. Lidar

We present a near-optimal quantum dynamical decoupling scheme that eliminates general decoherence of a qubit to order n using O(n2) pulses, an exponential decrease in pulses over all previous decoupling methods. Numerical simulations of a qubit coupled to a spin bath demonstrate the superior performance of the new pulse sequences.

Exact results on dynamical decoupling by π pulses in quantum information processes

Götz Silvester Uhrig

The aim of dynamical decoupling consists in the suppression of decoherence by appropriate coherent control of a quantum register. Effectively, the interaction with the environment is reduced. In particular, a sequence of π pulses is considered. Here we present exact results on the suppression of the coupling of a quantum bit to its environment by optimized sequences of π pulses. The effect of various cut-offs of the spectral density of the environment is investigated. As a result we show that the harder the cut-off is, the better an optimized pulse sequence can deal with it. For cut-offs which are neither completely hard nor very soft we advocate iterated optimized sequences.

Rigorous bounds for optimal dynamical decoupling

Götz Silvester Uhrig, Daniel A. Lidar

We present rigorous performance bounds for the optimal dynamical decoupling pulse sequence protecting a quantum bit (qubit) against pure dephasing. Our bounds apply under the assumption of instantaneous pulses and of bounded perturbing environment and qubit-environment Hamiltonians such as those realized by baths of nuclear spins in quantum dots. We show that if the total sequence time is fixed the optimal sequence can be used to make the distance between the protected and unperturbed qubit states arbitrarily small in the number of applied pulses. If, on the other hand, the minimum pulse interval is fixed and the total sequence time is allowed to scale with the number of pulses, then longer sequences need not always be advantageous. The rigorous bound may serve as a testbed for approximate treatments of optimal decoupling in bounded models of decoherence.
