Uniform Additivity of Tripartite Optimized Correlation Measures

Joshua Levin, Ariel Shlosberg, Vikesh Siddhu +1 more

Information theory provides a framework for answering fundamental questions about the optimal performance of many important quantum communication and computational tasks. In many cases, the optimal rates of these tasks can be expressed in terms of regularized formulas that consist of linear combinations of von Neumann entropies optimized over state extensions. However, evaluation of regularized formulas is often intractable, since it involves computing a formula’s value in the limit of infinitely many copies of a state. To find optimized linear entropic functions of quantum states whose regularized versions are tractable to compute, we search for examples which are additive. We use the method of cross2017uniform, which considers bipartite formulas, to identify convex polyhedral cones of tripartite correlation measures which satisfy a stronger a form of additivity called uniform additivity. We rely only on strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy and use these cones to prove that three previously established tripartite optimized correlation measures are additive.

Squashed quantum non-Markovianity: a measure of genuine quantum non-Markovianity in states

Rajeev Gangwar, Tanmoy Pandit, Kaumudibikash Goswami +2 more

Quantum non-Markovianity in tripartite quantum states ρABC represents a correlation between systems A and C when conditioned on the system B and is known to have both classical and quantum contributions. However, a systematic characterization of the latter is missing. To address this, we propose a faithful measure for non-Markovianity of genuine quantum origin called squashed quantum non-Markovianity (sQNM). It is based on the quantum conditional mutual information and is defined by the left-over non-Markovianity after squashing out all non-quantum contributions. It is lower bounded by the squashed entanglement between non-conditioning systems in the reduced state and is delimited by the extendibility of either of the non-conditioning systems. We show that the sQNM is monogamous, asymptotically continuous, convex, additive on tensor-product states, and generally super-additive. We characterize genuine quantum non-Markovianity as a resource via a convex resource theory after identifying free states with vanishing sQNM and free operations that do not increase sQNM in states. We use our resource-theoretic framework to bound the rate of state transformations under free operations and to study state transformation under non-free operations; in particular, we find the quantum communication cost from Bob ( B ) to Alice ( A ) or Charlie ( C ) is lower bounded by the change in sQNM in the states. The sQNM finds operational meaning; in particular, the optimal rate of private communication in a variant of conditional one-time pad protocol is twice the sQNM. Also, the minimum deconstruction cost for a variant of quantum deconstruction protocol is given twice the sQNM of the state.

“Squashed entanglement”: An additive entanglement measure

Matthias Christandl, Andreas Winter

In this paper, we present a new entanglement monotone for bipartite quantum states. Its definition is inspired by the so-called intrinsic information of classical cryptography and is given by the halved minimum quantum conditional mutual information over all tripartite state extensions. We derive certain properties of the new measure which we call “squashed entanglement”: it is a lower bound on entanglement of formation and an upper bound on distillable entanglement. Furthermore, it is convex, additive on tensor products, and superadditive in general. Continuity in the state is the only property of our entanglement measure which we cannot provide a proof for. We present some evidence, however, that our quantity has this property, the strongest indication being a conjectured Fannes-type inequality for the conditional von Neumann entropy. This inequality is proved in the classical case.
