We identify for bosons confined in a planar harmonic waveguide, a regime where the interactions are well modelled by an effective two-body zero-range two-dimensional interaction potential. Using this approximation we give an expression for the three body recombination rate, providing an estimate of the life time of a two-dimensional atomic condensate.

We derive exact general relations between various observables for N bosons with zero-range interactions, in two or three dimensions, in an arbitrary external potential. Some of our results are analogous to relations derived previously for two-component fermions and involve derivatives of the energy with respect to the two-body s-wave scattering length a. Moreover, in the three-dimensional case, where the Efimov effect takes place, the interactions are characterized not only by a, but also by a three-body parameter Rt. We then find additional relations which involve the derivative of the energy with respect to Rt. In short, this derivative gives the probability of finding three particles close to each other. Although it is evaluated for a totally lossless model, it also gives the three-body loss rate always present in experiments (due to three-body recombination to deeply bound diatomic molecules), at least in the limit where the so-called inelasticity parameter $\ensuremath{\eta}$ is small enough. As an application, we obtain, within the zero-range model and to first order in $\ensuremath{\eta}$, an analytic expression for the three-body loss rate constant for a nondegenerate Bose gas at thermal equilibrium with infinite scattering length. We also discuss the generalization to arbitrary mixtures of bosons and/or fermions.
We derive the asymptotic expansions of the wave function of three particles having equal mass with finite-range interactions and infinite or zero two-dimensional scattering length colliding at zero energy and zero orbital angular momentum, from which a three-body parameter D is defined. The dimension of D is length squared, and we call D three-body scattering area. We find that the ground-state energy per particle of a zero-temperature dilute Bose gas with these interactions is approximately $\frac{{\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}D}{6m}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{2}$, where $\ensuremath{\rho}$ is the number density of the bosons and m is the mass of each boson. Such a zero-temperature Bose gas is stable at D>0 in the thermodynamic limit, and metastable at D<0 in the isotropic harmonic trap if the number of bosons is less than ${N}_{\mathrm{cr}}\ensuremath{\approx}3.6413\sqrt{\frac{\ensuremath{\hbar}}{m\ensuremath{\omega}|D|}\phantom{{}^{1}}}$, where $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is the angular frequency of the harmonic trap. If the two-body interaction supports bound states, D typically acquires a negative imaginary part, and we find the relation between this imaginary part and the amplitudes of the pair-boson production processes. We derive a formula for the three-body recombination rate constant of the many-boson system in terms of the imaginary part of D.
We consider a two-dimensional Bose gas formed in a planar atomic trap in conditions where the two-dimensional scattering length exceeds all other microscopic length scales in the system and, accordingly, the gas parameter assumes relatively high values. We show that, unlike in the three-dimensional case, for sufficiently low areal densities the two-dimensional gas remains stable against collapse even in the resonant regime. Furthermore, we evaluate the three-body recombination rate that sets the upper limit for the lifetime of the two-dimensional resonant atomic condensate.
We study the wave function φ(3) of three identical bosons scattering at zero energy, zero total momentum, and zero orbital angular momentum in two dimensions, interacting via short-range potentials with a finite two-body scattering length a. We derive asymptotic expansions of φ(3) in two regimes: the 111-expansion, where all three pairwise distances are large, and the 21-expansion, where one particle is far from the other two. In the 111-expansion, the leading term grows as ln3(B/a) at large hyperradius B=(s12+s22+s32)/2. At order B−2ln−3(B/a), we identify a three-body parameter D with dimension of length squared, which we term the three-body scattering area. This quantity should be contrasted with the three-body scattering area previously studied for infinite or vanishing two-body scattering length. If the two-body interaction is attractive and supports bound states, D acquires a negative imaginary part, and we derive its relation to the probability amplitudes for the production of two-body bound states in three-body collisions. Under weak modifications of the interaction potentials, we derive the corresponding shift of D in terms of φ(3) and the changes of the two-body and three-body potentials. We also study the effects of D and φ(3) on three-body and many-body physics, including the three-body ground-state energy in a large periodic volume, the many-body energy and the three-body correlation function of the dilute two-dimensional Bose gas, and the three-body recombination rates of two-dimensional ultracold atomic Bose gases.
We report on measurements of three-body recombination loss rates in an ultracold gas of ^{7}Li atoms in the extremely nonuniversal regime where the two-body scattering length vanishes. We show that the loss rate coefficient is well defined and can be described by two-body parameters only: the scattering length a and the effective range R_{e}. We find the rate to be energy independent, and, by connecting our results with previously reported measurements in the universal limit, we cover the behavior of the three-body recombination rate in the whole range from weak to strong two-body interactions. We identify a nontrivial magnetic field value in the nonuniversal regime where the rate should be suppressed.
We study three-body recombination in two dimensions for systems interacting via short-range two-body interactions in the regime of large scattering lengths. Using the adiabatic hyperspherical representation, we derive semianalytical formulas for three-body recombination in both weakly and deeply bound diatom states. Our results demonstrate the importance of long-range corrections to the three-body potentials by showing how they alter the low-energy and scattering-length dependence of the recombination rate for both bosonic and fermionic systems, which exhibit suppressed recombination if compared to the three-dimensional case. We verify these results through numerical calculations of recombination for systems with finite-range interactions and supporting a few two-body bound states. We also study finite-range effects for the energies of the universal three-identical-bosons states and find a slow approach to universal predictions as a function of the scattering length.
