Calculation of Multiphoton Transition in Li Atoms via Chirped Microwave Pulse

Abstract

The position and width of avoided crossings of Li atom energy levels in a static electric field is presented by using the B-spline basis set method combined with the model potential. Using the time-dependent multilevel approach, the population of Li atoms is transferred to the target state completely by one-photon, two-photon or a single multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage, which requires only a small frequency sweep. The calculation results agree well with the experiment and novel explanations are given to understand the experimental results.

Coherent Control of Population Transfer in Li Atoms via Chirped Microwave Pulses

Guang-Rui Jia, Zhang Ji-Cai, Xianzhou Zhang +1 more

We demonstrate theoretically that Li atoms can be transferred to states of a lower principal quantum number by exposing them to a frequency chirped microwave pulse. The population transfer of Li atoms from the n = 75 state to n = 70 with more than 90% efficiency is achieved by means of the sequential single-photon Δn = –1 transitions. The calculation fully utilizes all of the available orbital angular momentum l states for a given n, and the interference pattern and population evolution dynamics of individual l states are analyzed in detail. Using the time-dependent multilevel approach, we describe the process reasonably well as a sequence of adiabatic rapid passages.

Coherent Control of Lithium Atom by Adiabatic Rapid Passage with Chirped Microwave Pulses

Lijuan Jiang, Xianzhou Zhang, Ma Huan-Qiang +2 more

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach and the B-spline technique, populations of Rydberg lithium atoms in chirped microwave pulses are demonstrated. Firstly the populations of two energy levels are controlled by the microwave pulse parameters. Secondly the atoms experience the consequence 70s-71p-72s-73p-74s in a microwave field using optimized microwave field parameters. It is shown that the coherent control of the population transfer in the microwave field from the initial to the target states can be accomplished by optimizing the microwave field parameters.

Lithium atom population transfer by population trapping in a chirped microwave pulse

Guang-Rui Jia, Xianzhou Zhang, Ren Zhen-Zhong +1 more

Using a time-dependent multilevel approach, we demonstrate that lithium atoms can be transferred to states of lower principle quantum number by exposing them to a frequency chirped microwave pulse. The population transfer from n = 79 to n = 70 states of lithium atoms with more than 80% efficiency is achieved by means of the sequential two-photon Δn = −1 transitions. It is shown that the coherent control of the population transfer can be accomplished by the optimization of the chirping parameters and microwave field strength. The calculation results agree well with the experimental ones and novel explanations have been given to understand the experimental results.

Multiphoton population transfer in a kicked Rydberg atom: adiabatic rapid passage by separatrix crossing

Türker Topçu, F. Robicheaux

Following an experimental observation, a recent simulation has shown that efficient population transfer can be achieved through adiabatic chirping of a microwave pulse through a 10-photon resonance connecting two Rydberg states with n = 72, ℓ = 1 and n ∼ 82. These simulations have revealed that this population transfer is essentially a classical transition caused by separatrix crossing in the classical phase space. Here, we present the results of our fully three-dimensional quantum and classical simulations of coherent multiphoton population transfer in a kicked Li atom in a Rydberg state. We were able to achieve ∼76% population transfer from the 40p to 46p state in Li through a 6-photon resonance and contrast our results with those when the transition is driven by microwaves. We further discuss the case when the atom starts out from a Stark state in conjunction with the ℓ-distribution of the transferred population. We use a one-dimensional classical model to investigate the classical processes taking place in the phase space and find that the same separatrix crossing mechanism observed in microwave transitions is also responsible for the transition when the atom is kicked.

Population coherent control of Rydberg potassium atom via adiabatic passage

Lijuan Jiang, Xianzhou Zhang, Guang-Rui Jia +2 more

The time-dependent multilevel approach (TDMA) and B-spline expansion technique are used to study the coherent population transfer between the quantum states of a potassium atom by a single frequency-chirped microwave pulse. The Rydberg potassium atom energy levels of n = 6–15, l = 0–5 states in zero field are calculated and the results are in good agreement with other theoretical values. The time evolutions of the population transfer of the six states from n = 70 to n = 75 in different microwave fields are obtained. The results show that the coherent control of the population transfer from the lower states to the higher ones can be accomplished by optimizing the microwave pulse parameters.

Quantum state population transfer of lithium atoms induced by frequency-chirped laser pulses

Huan Ma

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach (TDMA) and B-splines function,we have calculated the five quantum state population transfer of rydberg lithium atoms. We also analyse the influence of the four major parameters of the requency-chirped laser pulses field on transition. The result shows that the population can be completely transferred to the target state by changing the parameters of the laser pulse and achieve manual controls to a certain degree.
