Abstract

In bipartite quantum systems of dimension 3× 3 the lowest rank entangled states that are positive under partial transposition (PPT) can be related, by product transformations, to states that are constructed by the use of unextendible product bases (UPB) in the Hilbert space of the system. Here we consider a possible generalization of the product bases, which can be related in a similar way to low-rank entangled density matrices in higher dimensions. The idea is to give up the condition of orthogonality of the product vectors, while keeping the relation between the density matrix and the projection on the associated UPB. We examine first this generalization for the 3 × 3 system where numerical studies indicate that one-parameter families of such generalized states can be found. Similar numerical searches in higher dimensional systems show the presence of extremal PPT states of the same form. Based on these results we indicate that the UPB construction of the lowest rank entangled states in the 3×3 system can be generalized to higher dimensions, with the use of non-orthogonal UPBs of the suggested form.

Unextendible product bases and extremal density matrices with positive partial transpose

Per Øyvind Sollid, Jon Magne Leinaas, Jan Myrheim

In bipartite quantum systems of dimension $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$, entangled states that are positive under partial transposition (PPT) can be constructed with the use of unextendible product bases (UPBs). As discussed in a previous publication, all the lowest rank entangled PPT states of this system seem to be equivalent, under $\mathrm{SL}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SL}$ transformations, to states that are constructed in this way. Here we consider a possible generalization of the UPB constuction to low-rank entangled PPT states in higher dimensions. The idea is to give up the condition of orthogonality of the product vectors, while keeping the relation between the density matrix and the projection on the subspace defined by the UPB. We examine first this generalization for the $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ system where numerical studies indicate that one-parameter families of such generalized states can be found. Similar numerical searches in higher dimensional systems show the presence of extremal PPT states of similar form. Based on these results we suggest that the UPB construction of the lowest rank entangled states in the $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ system can be generalized to higher dimensions, with the use of nonorthogonal UPBs.

Low-rank extremal positive-partial-transpose states and unextendible product bases

Jon Magne Leinaas, Jan Myrheim, Per Øyvind Sollid

It is known how to construct, in a bipartite quantum system, a unique low-rank entangled mixed state with positive partial transpose (a PPT state) from an unextendible product basis (UPB), defined as an unextendible set of orthogonal product vectors. We point out that a state constructed in this way belongs to a continuous family of entangled PPT states of the same rank, all related by nonsingular unitary or nonunitary product transformations. The characteristic property of a state $\ensuremath{\rho}$ in such a family is that its kernel $\text{Ker} \ensuremath{\rho}$ has a generalized UPB, a basis of product vectors, not necessarily orthogonal, with no product vector in $\mathrm{Im} \ensuremath{\rho}$, the orthogonal complement of $\text{Ker} \ensuremath{\rho}$. The generalized UPB in $\text{Ker} \ensuremath{\rho}$ has the special property that it can be transformed to orthogonal form by a product transformation. In the case of a system of dimension $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$, we give a complete parametrization of orthogonal UPBs. This is then a parametrization of families of rank 4 entangled (and extremal) PPT states, and we present strong numerical evidence that it is a complete classification of such states. We speculate that the lowest rank entangled and extremal PPT states also in higher dimensions are related to generalized, nonorthogonal UPBs in similar ways.

Bound entangled states with positive partial transposition based on UPB in three-qudit system

Bichen Che, Zhao Dou, XIUBO CHEN +3 more

Abstract In this work, we concentrate on identifying bound entangled states with positive partial transposition in tripartite system. Since directly extending PPT-BE states from bipartite to tripartite systems is nontrivial, we adopt unextendible product bases (UPBs) as a tool to generate tripartite PPT-BE states. First, a set of UPB with cardinalities d 3 − 4 d + 3 is presented to characterize the extremal states of PPT set in the C d ⨂ C d ⨂ C d system. Using this basis, the missing states are introduced and employed to identify a 2 d − 1 -parameter family of PPT entangled edge states. Additionally, a generation circuit is provided which transforms the states in Z-basis to the missing states in three-qudit composite system. This circuit intuitively reflects the structure of the missing states and prepares for the generation of PPT entangled states. Our work demonstrates a different construction method of PPT entangled edge states in higher-dimensional multipartite system, providing a general insight into the relationship between nonlocality and entanglement in such system.

Three-by-three bound entanglement with general unextendible product bases

Łukasz Skowronek

We discuss the subject of unextendible product bases with the orthogonality condition dropped and we prove that the lowest rank non-separable positive-partial-transpose states, i.e., states of rank 4 in 3 × 3 systems are always locally equivalent to a projection onto the orthogonal complement of a linear subspace spanned by an orthogonal unextendible product basis. The product vectors in the kernels of the states belong to a non-zero measure subset of all general unextendible product bases, nevertheless, they can always be locally transformed to the orthogonal form. This fully confirms the surprising numerical results recently reported by Leinaas et al. Parts of the paper rely heavily on the use of Bezout's theorem from algebraic geometry.

Construction of multipartite unextendible product bases and geometric measure of entanglement of positive-partial-transpose entangled states

Yize Sun, Baoshan Wang, Li, Shiru

In quantum information theory, it is a fundamental problem to construct multipartite unextendible product bases (UPBs). We show that there exist two families UPBs in Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^4$ by merging two different systems of an existing $7$-qubit UPB of size $11$. Moreover, a new family of $7$-qubit positive-partial-transpose (PPT) entangled states of rank $2^7-11$ is constructed. We analytically derive a geometric measure of entanglement of a special PPT entangled states. Also an upper bound are given by two methods.

Constructing 2 × 2 × 4 and 4 × 4 unextendible product bases and positive-partial-transpose entangled states

Kai Wang, Lin Chen, Yi Shen +2 more

The 4-qubit unextendible product bases (UPBs) has been recently studied by [Johnston, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 47 (2014) 424034]. Based on this study we show that there is only one UPB of size 6 and six UPBs of size 9 in H=C2⊗C2⊗C4, three UPBs of size 9 in K=C4⊗C4, and no UPB of size 7 in H and K. Furthermore we construct a new family of 4-qubit positive-partial-transpose (PPT) entangled states of rank seven, and show that they are also PPT entangled states in H and K, respectively. We analytically derive a geometric measure of a special PPT entangled states.
