Optical QPSK Signal Quality Degradation due to Phase Error of Pump Light in Optical Parametric Phase-Sensitive Amplifier Repeaters

Takeshi Kimura, Yasuhiro Okamura, Atsushi Takada

The influence of pump phase error on phase-sensitive optical amplifier (PSA) repeaters and the waveform degradation due to chromatic dispersion and fiber nonlinearities in the optical multi-relay transmission of quadrature phase-shift keying phase-conjugated twin waves are considered theoretically. First, the influence of noise from the pump phase error, optical local oscillator, receiver, and the amplified spontaneous-emission (ASE) in PSA repeaters is investigated with the assumption that transmission fibers are linear lossy channels. The bit-error rate (BER) is estimated as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio, and the relationship between the number of transmission relays and the fiber launch power is clarified. Waveform degradation due to chromatic dispersion and the optical fiber nonlinearities in transmission fibers are investigated with the noiseless condition, and the maximum repeatable number as a function of the fiber launch power is calculated. Finally, we show the relationship among the maximum repeatable number, standard deviation of pump phase error in PSA repeaters, and the fiber launch power to clarify the optimum transmission condition with consideration of the noise and the waveform degradation.

Noise Properties of Degenerate Dual Pump Phase Sensitive Amplifiers

Adonis Bogris, Dimitris Syvridis, C. Efstathiou

The noise properties of phase sensitive amplifiers based on degenerate four-wave mixing in optical fibers are studied taking into account the quantum noise amplification, the amplitude and phase noise properties of the pump sources. An analytical tool is presented for the direct calculation of the amplifier noise figure also verified by extensive numerical simulations. The signal power dependence of noise figure is both analytically and numerically accented. The need for high speed and precise phase locking is also revealed in order to diminish the effect of phase noise on the noise properties of the amplifier.

Pump Frequency Allocation and Dispersion Effect on Dual-Pump Phase Sensitive Amplifier Gain Spectrum

Ruwan U. Weerasuriya, Junda Chen, Rasmus Larsson +1 more

Dual-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers offer wide, flat gain spectra across arbitrary wavelengths, often outperforming the use of single-pump designs. However, gain flatness depends on the pump frequencies’ center of gravity relative to the nonlinear fiber’s zero-dispersion wavelength. This study experimentally investigated the gain, gain flatness, and noise figure of degenerate dual-pump fiber-optic phase-sensitive amplification at various separations between these points. We demonstrated 38 dB gain with 1.5 dB gain flatness variation over a 30 nm bandwidth as well as a noise figure below the conventional 3 dB quantum limit for a degenerate signal.
