Optical amplification of single-photon polarization qubit using weak measurement

Ruitong Zhao, Jianjun Guo, Lianglun Cheng

Abstract Single-photon amplification can be used to overcome the photon loss in long-distance quantum communication. However, the trade-off of success probability and amplification gain should be further improved. We propose a single-photon polarization qubit amplification using weak measurement. The polarization qubit can be amplified by the pre- and post-selection of the single-photon meter state weakly coupling with the input state. The success probability does not decrease asymptotically to 0 with increasing amplification gain in the presented proposal, and is higher than that in entanglement-based schemes, without coincidence detection required. Our proposal is feasible in current technology, and helpful for near-future quantum communication.

Metasurface-Assisted Quantum Nonlocal Weak-Measurement Microscopy

Jiawei Liu, Qiang Yang, Yichang Shou +5 more

In standard quantum weak measurements, preselection and postselection of quantum states are implemented in the same photon. Here we go beyond this restrictive setting and demonstrate that the preselection and postselection can be performed in two different photons, if the two photons are polarization entangled. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurface is incorporated in the weak measurement system to perform weak coupling between probe wave function and spin observable. By introducing nonlocal weak measurement into the microscopy imaging system, it allows us to remotely switch different microscopy imaging modes of pure-phase objects, including bright-field, differential, and phase reconstruction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nonlocal weak-measurement scheme can prevent almost all environmental noise photons from detection and thus achieves a higher image contrast than the standard scheme at a low photon level. Our results provide the possibility to develop a quantum nonlocal weak-measurement microscope for label-free imaging of transparent biological samples.

Sequential unsharp measurement of photon polarization

Петер Адам, Lajos Diósi

We propose a general experimental scheme based on binary trees of partially polarizing beam splitters (PPBSs) for realizing sequential unsharp measurements of photon polarization. The sharpnesses and the bases of the particular photon polarization measurements can be chosen arbitrarily by using corresponding PPBSs and phase plates in the setup. In the limit of low sharpnesses the scheme can realize sequential weak measurements, too. We develop a general formalism for describing sequential unsharp measurements of photon polarization in which the particular unsharp measurements are characterized by appropriate measurement operators. We show that a straightforward experimental realization of this model is the proposed scheme. In this formalism the output polarization states after the sequential measurement and any correlation functions characterizing the measurement results can be easily calculated. Our model can be used for analyzing the consequences of applying postselection and reselection in the measurement. We derive the anomalous mean value for an unsharp polarization measurement with postselection and the anomalous second-order correlation function for the sequential unsharp measurement of photon polarization with reselection. We show that these anomalies can be easily measured using the proposed scheme.
