TIME REVERSAL SYMMETRY AND NON-EQUILIBRIUM STATISTICAL STATIONARY STATES (I)

ZHOU GUANG-ZHAO, Zhao-Bin Su, 中国科学院理论物理研究所

This is the first part of our work on time reversal symmetry applied to non-equi-librium statistical stationary states from a unified microscopic quantum statistical point of view. In this paper, a formalism for time reversal symmetry is constructed in the framework of the Closed Time Path Green's Functions (CTPGF), which can be applied both to equilibrium and non-equilibrium stationary states. By using the generating functional technique of the CTPGF, symmetry relations for the statistical Green's functions and vertex runctions are derived for systems invariant under time reversal.

Mode expansion and photon operators in dispersive and absorbing dielectrics

Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta, R. Girlanda

We present a one-dimensional quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in arbitrary planar absorbing and dispersive dielectrics, taking into account explicitly the finite extent of media. The complete form of the electric field operator includes a part that corresponds to the free fields incident from the vacuum towards the medium and a particular solution which can be expressed by using the classical Green-function integral representation of the electromagnetic field. By expressing the classical Green function in terms of the light modes of the dielectric structure, we obtain a natural generalization to absorbing media of the familiar method of mode expansion which strictly applies to non-absorbing media. As an application of our mode expansion, we obtain general quantum-optical input-output relations relating the output photon operators in vacuum to the input photon operators and to the reservoir noise operators. The input-output relations obtained are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the classical light modes of the planar system. We finally show that our quantization scheme for arbitrary planar dielectrics satisfies the prescribed equal-time commutation relations of QED.

The general expression for the transition amplitude of two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen

Erna Karule, B. Moine

Two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen with an excess photon is revisited. The non-relativistic dipole approximation and Coulomb Green function (CGF) formalism are applied. Using the CGF Sturmian expansion straightforwardly, one gets the radial transition amplitude in the form of an infinite sum over Gauss hypergeometric functions which are polynomials. It is convergent if all intermediate states are in the discrete spectrum. In the case of two-photon ionization with an excess photon, when photoionization is also possible, intermediate states are in the continuum. We performed the explicit summation over intermediate states and got a simple general expression for the radial transition amplitude in the form of a finite sum over Appell hypergeometric functions, which are not polynomials. An Appell function may be expressed as an infinite sum over Gauss functions. In the case of ionization by an excess photon, Gauss functions are transformed to give a convergent radial transition amplitude for the whole region. The generalized cross sections for two-photon above-threshold ionization of atomic hydrogen in the ground state and excited states calculated by us agree very well with results of previous calculations. Generalized cross sections for two-photon ionization of positronium in the ground state are obtained by scaling those for atomic hydrogen.
