Abstract

By two-photon excitation with phase manipulated short laser pulses, we selectively generate ultracold excitons in Cu2O crystal while quenching a multiphoton excitation process of hot electrons and holes.

By using a pulse shaping method, we control the resonant two-photon excitation probability of 1s orthoexcitons in Cu2O and suppress the undesired three-photon interband transition which emerges at a high power excitation.

Dark excitons in Cu2O crystals for two-photon coherence storage in semiconductors

Kosuke Yoshioka, Makoto Kuwata‐Gonokami

The two-photon coherence of infrared pulses is preserved for more than $250\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$ by dark excitons in ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ crystals. Taking into account the nonlocal electron-hole exchange interaction, $1s$ orthoexcitons are split into one bright exciton state that is quadrupole active and two dark exciton states that are two-photon active but one-photon inactive. Interference of cold dark exciton waves excited by a phase-locked pulse pair is observed with an almost perfect visibility and a beating pattern indicating and an energy splitting in the $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{eV}$ range is seen. The long-lived two-photon coherence of dark excitons indicates their strong potential for coherence storage applications.

Quantum Controllable Optical Selectivity of Single-Photon Excitation in a Dense Medium

Han Xu, Heping Zeng

Selective multiphoton excitations can be achieved by tailoring the driving pulses to manipulate the outcome of the light-matter interaction. While single-photon transitions of single atoms driven by ultrashort pulses, dependent mainly on the resonant frequency component, and thus possesses no optical selectivity no matter how the excitation pulse shapes [1]. Interestingly, when an ultrashort pulse interacts with an optically dense medium, quantum controllable optical selectivity can be achieved in a single-photon process.

Ultrafast Coherent Control of Excitons Using Pulse-Shaping Technique

Kazuhiro Komori, Takeyoshi Sugaya, Masanobu Watanabe +1 more

In this paper, we report on the ultrafast coherent control of excitons in quantum wells using a phase-locked pulse sequence generated by pulse-shaping techniques. The pulse-shaping system with a double liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM), and a Ti3+-sapphire laser is used to generate phase-locked pulses. The ultrafast coherent control of the exciton population and polarization is demonstrated by the observation of the reflectivity change in the pump-probe and the diffracted power in the degenerate-four-wave-mixing (DFWM) measurements. In single quantum wells, good coherent control characteristics with 87% coherent carrier destruction are demonstrated at the low excitation power of 0.15 mW (∼1.1×1010 photons/cm2). In addition, the preliminary manipulation of the exciton population is demonstrated by the phase-locked triple pulses. In the case of coupled quantum wells, the modulation of the SLM is carefully controlled and the coherent control of both the exciton population and the polarization is demonstrated in the two different coupled quantum-well samples.

Two‐photon coherent control of dark orthoexcitons in Cu2O

Kosuke Yoshioka, Makoto Kuwata‐Gonokami

Abstract We investigate experimentally the two‐photon coherence exhibited by optically forbidden exciton states in the bulk semiconductor Cu2O. Two‐photon coherent control is achieved by using phase‐locked optical pulse pairs. Very long dephasing times and a fine energy splittings of the order of µ‐eV are observed.
