Free-time and fixed end-point optimal control theory in dissipative media: Application to entanglement generation and maintenance

K. Mishima, Koichi Yamashita

We develop monotonically convergent free-time and fixed end-point optimal control theory (OCT) in the density-matrix representation to deal with quantum systems showing dissipation. Our theory is more general and flexible for tailoring optimal laser pulses in order to control quantum dynamics with dissipation than the conventional fixed-time and fixed end-point OCT in that the optimal temporal duration of laser pulses can also be optimized exactly. To show the usefulness of our theory, it is applied to the generation and maintenance of the vibrational entanglement of carbon monoxide adsorbed on the copper (100) surface, CO/Cu(100). We demonstrate the numerical results and clarify how to combat vibrational decoherence as much as possible by the tailored shapes of the optimal laser pulses. It is expected that our theory will be general enough to be applied to a variety of dissipative quantum dynamics systems because the decoherence is one of the quantum phenomena sensitive to the temporal duration of the quantum dynamics.

Attosecond quantum control of optical microcavities via unipolar rectangular light pulses

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail Arkhipov, Nikolay N. Rosanov

Unipolar light pulses with non-zero electric area enable ultrafast control of quantum systems, requiring tailored temporal shapes like rectangular pulses for efficient atomic manipulation. Such pulses induce unique phenomena, including dynamic microcavities at resonant transitions in multilevel media. Here, we compare microcavity dynamics in two- and three-level media under rectangular unipolar pulse excitation via numerical solutions of the density matrix and wave equations. Unlike Gaussian pulses, rectangular pulses exhibit starkly different dynamics in a three-level medium, disrupting self-induced transparency-like regimes. Key differences emerge when pulses behave as 2 π pulses, highlighting the impact of the third level on microcavity dynamics. These findings establish rectangular unipolar attosecond pulses as a powerful tool for attosecond-scale quantum control, revealing fundamental limits of few-level approximations in extreme nonlinear optics and opening pathways to coherent light–matter engineering in complex atomic systems.

Controlling Nonadiabatic Transitions Through Engineered Ultrafast Laser Fields at Conical Intersections

Xuanchao Zhang, Yang-Cheng Ye, Panpan Zhang +5 more

In this paper, we investigate coherent control of nonadiabatic dynamics at a conical intersection (CI) using engineered ultrafast laser pulses. Within a model vibronic system, we tailor pulse chirp and temporal profile and compute the resulting wave-packet population and coherence dynamics using projections along the reaction coordinate. This approach allows us to resolve the detailed evolution of wave-packets as they traverse the degeneracy region with strong nonadiabatic coupling. By systematically varying pulse parameters, we demonstrate that both chirp and pulse duration modulate vibrational coherence and alter branching between competing pathways, leading to controlled changes in quantum yield. Our results elucidate the dynamical mechanisms underlying pulse-shaped control near conical intersections and establish a general framework for manipulating ultrafast nonadiabatic processes.
