Dissipationless behavior of asymptotic non-Markovian dynamics within structured environments

Abstract

We investigate the long-lived quantum coherence in the non-Markovian process of spontaneous decay of a two-qubit system subject to a local environment. The asymptotic population of the qubit is linked to the spectral density of the reservoir through a general functional relation between them. The dissipationless behavior of asymptotic processes, including the steady coherent dynamics with self-sustained oscillations and ultimate persistence of quantum correlations, are elaborated with respect to spectral parameters of the specified reservoirs, e.g., the Ohmic class and the photonic crystal. We expect these results to contribute towards reservoir engineering with the aim of enhancing stationary quantum coherence in noisy environments.

Long-lived quantum coherence of two-level spontaneous emission models within structured environments

We investigate the long-lived quantum coherence of two-level spontaneous emission models within structured environments. The population of the system under the asymptotic non-Markovian dynamics is linked to the spectral density of the reservoir through a general functional relation between them. We figure out explicitly the preservation of quantum coherence, via notions of entanglement and quantum discord, in connection with the spectral parameters of Ohmic class reservoirs, and then show how to achieve them optimally. We expect these results to contribute to reservoir engineering with the aim of enhancing stationary quantum coherence in noisy environments.

Phenomena of limit cycle oscillations for non-Markovian dissipative systems undergoing long-time evolution

You Bo, Li-Xiang Cen

Understanding the non-Markovian dynamics of dissipative processes induced by memory effects of the environment is a fundamental subject of open quantum systems. Because of the complexity of open quantum systems, e.g., the multiple energy scales involving that of the system, the environment, and their mutual coupling, it is generally a challenging task to characterize the relationship among the parameters of the system dynamics and the reservoir spectra. For the two-level spontaneous emission model within structured environments, it was shown in a recent literature (Opt. Lett. 38, 3650) that a functional relation could be established between the asymptotically non-decaying population and the spectral density of the reservoir as the system undergoes a long-time evolution. It hence renders a distinct perspective to look into the character of long-lived quantum coherence in the corresponding non-Markovian process. This article is devoted to further investigate the phenomena of limit cycle oscillations possibly occurring in such non-Markovian dissipative systems in a long-time evolution. For a two-level system subjected to an environment with Ohmic class spectra, due to the presence of a unique bound-state mode of the system, the evolution trajectory of the given initial states will converge to a limit cycle in the Bloch space. The dependence of the radius and the location of the limit cycle on the spectral density function of the reservoir are manifested by virtue of the described functional relation. For the model subjected to a photonic crystal environment with multiple bands, our studies reveal that, owing to the presence of two or more bound states, the evolution trajectory of the system will converge to a toric curve of a paraboloid in the Bloch space and the phenomena of periodic or quasi-periodic oscillations could exhibit. While the equation of the parabolic curve is fully determined by the initial values of the state vector in the Bloch space, our results reveal that the scope of the evolution trajectory inside the toric curve is related to the spectral density of the reservoir and their quantified relation is distinctly characterized. Finally, the asymptotic dynamics of the correlations of a two-qubit system is discussed when it is subjected locally to the non-Markovian dissipative process.

Non-Markovian to Markovian decay in structured environments with correlated disorder

Mariana O. Monteiro, Nadja K. Bernardes, Eugene M. Broni +2 more

Manipulating the dynamics of open quantum systems is a crucial requirement for large-scale quantum computers. Finding ways to overcome or extend decoherence times is a challenging task. Already at the level of a single two-level atom, its reduced dynamics with respect to a larger environment can be very complex. Structured environments, for instance, can lead to various regimes other than memoryless Markovian spontaneous emission. Here, we consider an atom coupled to an array of coupled cavities in the presence of on-site correlated disorder. The correlation is long-ranged and associated with the trace of a fractional Brownian motion following a power-law spectrum. With the cavity modes playing the role of the environment, we study the dynamics of the spontaneous emission. We observe a change from non-Markovian to Markovian decay in the presence of disorder by tuning the correlation parameter. This is associated with a localization-delocalization transition involving the field modes. Two dissipative models that effectively reproduce the behavior of the non-Markovianity are discussed. The dissipation dynamics of the atom can thus be used to extract information about the phase of the environment. Our results provide a direction in the engineering of disordered quantum systems to function as controllable reservoirs.

Non-classicality dynamics of Schrödinger cat states in a non-Markovian environment

Xiang Cheng, Shao-Hua Xiang, Yu-Jing Zhao

Abstract By virtue of the superoperator technique, we solve analytically the non-Markovian master equation that describes single-mode continuous variable system interacting with a structure reservoir. Our analytical solution allows us to investigate the non-Markovian effects on the dynamics of quantum coherence and non-classicality of Schrödinger cat states embedded in various types of structured reservoirs. We show that the dynamical behaviors of the fidelity, entanglement potentials, and higher-order antibunching of such states can be divided into two phases: they decay rapidly within a short time, but would either vanish completely or tend to a nonzero steady-state value in the long-time limit depending on the initial Schrödinger cat states and system parameters. We also show that by examining the Wigner function and higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics, the super-Ohmic environment can better help to protect the non-classicality, whereas the sub-Ohmic environment causes the disappearance of the non-classicality. Our approach is concise and can generalize to other open quantum system coupled to non-Markovian environment at finite-temperature or to linear non-Markovian Gaussian system.

Survival of coherence for open quantum systems in thermal baths

Filippo Giraldi, Francesco Petruccione

The loss of coherence in a general open quantum system interacting with a bosonic environment is analyzed. The reservoir is initially in a thermal state. The reduced dynamics is described by a non-Markovian time-local master equation. We consider spectral densities that are sub- or super-Ohmic at low frequencies and arbitrarily shaped at high frequencies. In the super-Ohmic regime, for noninteger frequency powers larger than 2, long time survival of coherence appears. In the latter regime, at vanishing temperature, the asymptotic amount of surviving coherence is stabilized to its initial value, up to a phase factor, by properly increasing the bandwidth and decreasing the low-frequency profile of the spectral density. For noninteger positive frequency powers less than 2, stretched exponential-like decoherence is found over long times. The relaxations to the asymptotic configurations become arbitrarily slow by approaching the frequency power 2 of the super-Ohmic regime. The same dependence on temperature, spectral density, and scale frequency appears for purity and concurrence of two qubits and coherence of a qubit.

Entropy squeezing and coherence for a non-Markovian dissipative qubit system

K. Berrada

We examine the impact of the non-Markovian environment on the dynamical behavior of the quantum coherence and entropy squeezing considering a two-level atomic system (qubit) immersed in a reservoir with zero-temperature for two types of non-Markovian environments. We consider a cavity little off-resonance with the transition frequency of the qubit and the case of a non-perfect photonic band gap (PBG). We show that the amount of coherence is dependent on the structure of the environment and influenced through the memory effects. We obtain that the delay and revival of the coherence loss might take place by controlling the detuning of the cavity-qubit system. Whereas, a partial coherence trapping occurs in non-ideal PBG and the decrease of the gap width will destroy the coherence. On the other hand, we show the situation for which the squeezing is occurring and enhanced with respect to the main parameters for the system. Finally, we display the monotonic dependence of the quantum coherence and squeezing on the main model parameters.
