Small-Capacitance Josephson Junctions: One-Dimensional Arrays and Single Junctions

道生 渡部, David B. Haviland

We review experiments on small-capacitance Josephson junctions. When the Josephson junction is fabricated in the configuration of dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), the Josephson coupling can be tuned IN SITU with an external magnetic field. The electrical transport properties of one-dimensional arrays of small-capacitance dc SQUIDs have been investigated in order to study the superconductor-insulator transition. The arrays have also been used to bias a single Josephson junction, and a clear Coulomb blockade of Cooper-pair tunneling has been observed in the single junction.

Quasi-Optical 2-D Josephson Junction Array Oscillators with On-Chip Inductive Tuning Structures

B. Liu, Michael J. Wengler

Progress in understanding the mechanism of coherent oscillation in twodimensional (2-D) Josephson junction arrays has been made through analysis of the coupling circuit between two Josephson junctions. For a 2-D array to oscillate in phase, capacitive coupling is required for adjacent junctions in the same row and inductive coupling for adjacent junctions in the same column of the array. Computer simulation has been developed for two junctions coupled through a general circuit to find the optimum coupling between two junctions. The junctions in the array are also integrated with inductive tuning elements to tune out the junctions' parasitic capacitance. We have built 2-D Josephson junction arrays but no coherent oscillation has yet been observed.

One-dimensional parallel Josephson-junction arrays as a tool for diagnostics

Herre S. J. van der Zant, R. A. M. Receveur, Terry P. Orlando +1 more

We propose and demonstrate the use of underdamped, one-dimensional parallel arrays of Josephson junctions as a tool for circuit diagnostics. By measuring the Fiske modes and the critical current in a magnetic field, we determined the self- and nearest-neighbor inductances as well as the capacitances of single junctions. We have used this technique to find the capacitance of Nb-Al2Ox-Nb junctions for critical current densities of 0.3–20 kA/cm2. We find that the specific capacitance increases by about a factor of 2 over this range. This increase has important consequences for the design of single-flux-quantum circuits and SQUIDs. Measurement of the junction capacitance for critical current densities of 100 kA/cm2 is possible, but requires submicrometer junctions with dimensions of the order of 0.3 μm.
