Abstract

For the quasi one-dimensional electron systems with coulomb interaction, a new model is presented. The form of effective Coulomb potential is derived. Based on the correlated wave function theory, the many-body wave function is obtained on the basis of the collective oscillation behavior of the electron gas. The pair correlation functions and correlation energies of the different electron densities are obtained. The pair correlation functions obtained in this paper are positive definite and satisfy the normalization condition.

A new real-space correlated-basis-functions approach for electron correlations of the semiconductor inversion layer

Wei-guo Feng, Hongwei Wang, Xiang Ying Wu

Based on the real-space correlated-basis-functions theory and the collective oscillation behaviour of the electron gas with effective Coulomb interaction, the many-body wavefunction is obtained for the quasi-two-dimensional electron system in the semiconductor inversion layer. The pair-correlation function and the correlation energy of the system have been calculated by the integro-differential method. A comparison with other previous theoretical results is also made. The new theoretical approach and its numerical results show that the pair-correlation functions are definitely positive and satisfy the normalisation condition.

Dielectric response of a one-dimensional electron gas

W. I. Friesen, B. Bergersen

The dielectric response of a quasi-one-dimensional system of interacting electrons has been investigated. In the authors' model the particles move freely in one direction and are tightly bound in the transverse direction. Calculation of the Coulomb matrix elements leads to an effective one-dimensional electron-electron interaction nu (q) which is less singular for small q than the 1/q 2 potential assumed by previous authors. As a result, the excitonic instability which they find even for a rigid positive background does not arise in their calculation. The calculations are based on the approximation of Singwi, Tosi, Land and Sjolander (1968). As expected in this approach, the pair correlation function at small distances remains positive over a much larger range of densities than that for which the compressibility sum rule is satisfied. The static dielectric function is negative around q=2k F , which suggests the possibility of charge ordering when the background is allowed to be polarisable. If nu (q) is replaced by a delta -function potential, a numerical calculation of the energy for the exact solution of Yang may be made. On comparison with the result obtained with the method of Singwi et al. it is found that the approximate scheme gives good correlation energies for high densities.

Electron correlation and many-body wave function of semiconductor heterojunction

Wang Hongwei, Feng Weiguo, MAO HUI-MING +1 more

Based on the Correlated-Basis-Functions (CBF) theory, we have obtained the many-body wave function for the quasi-two-dimensional electron system in Al x Ga 1-x As-GaAs heterojunction. The pair-correlation functions g(R) were calculated, and a new method for the calculation of correlation energy was also presented.

Pair-correlation function of the electron gas with long-range Coulomb interaction: Ladder theory

L. Calmels, Alfred Gold

We present analytical and numerical results for the pair-correlation function $g(r=0)$ of the electron gas with long-range Coulomb interaction obtained within the ladder theory. Analytical results obtained by perturbation calculation and a Pad\'e approximation are derived and are found to be in good agreement with our numerical solution of the ladder equation. Finite-width effects in the two-dimensional electron gas (quantum well) are also described. For quasi-one-dimensional systems (quantum wires) numerical and analytical results are derived for an oscillator confinement model.
