Emergent Ising symmetry and supercritical fluids

Hong-Ming Cui, Zhong-Ying Fan

A bstract The symmetry of Ising model questions any single crossover scenario for supercritical fluids. In this work, we firstly study a pair of thermodynamic crossovers L ± analytically for the Van der Waals class fluids. We uncover an emergent Z 2 symmetry in addition to the universal scalings in the scaling regime for this class fluids. By using the self-reciprocal property between coexistenct phases, we further establish that under suitable conditions, the Ising symmetry generally emerges in the scaling regime for a general universality class. As a consequence, the thermodynamic crossovers L ± generally exhibit an emergent Z 2 symmetry in the scaling regime. This partly resolves the symmetry puzzle raised by the Ising model. The results also imply that the physical importance of the Ising model in critical phenomenon is far beyond the scope of magentic transitions.

Crossover scaling function for the lattice anisotropy of the quasi-two-dimensional Ising models: the susceptibility

W.L. Basaiawmoit, S Singh

The crossover scaling behaviour for the lattice anisotropy of the susceptibility of the quasi-two-dimensional Ising models has been studied using high-temperature series expansions. The predictions of the extended scaling hypothesis are verified and the plots of the effective exponent are presented in the scaling regime. These results should provide a basis for comparison with experiments on quasi-two-dimensional Ising systems.

The decoupling point of the axial next-nearest-neighbour Ising model and marginal crossover

David A. Huse, Michael Ellis Fisher

The axial next-nearest-neighbour Ising (or ANNNI) model and the four-state asymmetric clock model both exhibit a decoupling multicritical point where they decompose into two uncoupled Ising models at criticality. The corresponding scaling exponents for various operators are given generally, the leading modulation or chiral crossover exponent being phi = gamma - nu , where gamma and nu are the pure Ising susceptibility and correlation exponents. Implications for the ANNNI model phase diagrams are discussed. Crossover scaling forms appropriate to logarithmic and marginal behaviour, with non-universal exponents, are presented.
