Matter-wave interactions in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

We investigate two vector-soliton–like matter waves collisions in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions and Gaussian barrier. We present a detailed numerical analysis of the roles of atomic interactions, barrier, relative velocity, and relative phase in collisional dynamics. We show that the interspecies interactions are crucial to make the wave packet propagate as a “breather”. We find that the collision-induced trajectory shifts of waves are mainly determined by the intraspecies interactions and proportional to them in the weak nonlinearity regime. Moreover, we explore the meeting time of colliding waves and find it depends on the competition between barrier potential and atomic interactions. Particularly, we study the collisions of two waves with a slight velocity asymmetry (or with different relative phases) and the waves merging and split are demonstrated. The underlying inelastic mechanism closely related to energy exchange is briefly discussed as well.

Soliton breathers in spin-1 Bose—Einstein condensates

Shen-Tong Ji, Pei-Gen Yan, Xue‐Shen Liu

We consider a spin-1 Bose—Einstein condensate trapped in a harmonic potential with different nonlinearity coefficients. We illustrate the dynamics of soliton breathers in two-component and three-component states by numerically solving the one-dimensional time-dependent coupled Gross—Pitaecskii equations (GPEs). We present that two condensates with repulsive interspecies interactions make elastic collision and novel soliton breathers are created in two-component state. We also demonstrate novel soliton breathers in three-component state with attractive coupling constants. Furthermore, possible reasons for creating soliton breathers are discussed.

Solitons and Breathers in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Henry Luo

Solitons are non-dispersive wave packets that balance the wave dispersion with a focusing nonlinearity. They maintain their shape and velocity after collisions with other solitons, owing to the integrability of the underlying nonlinear partial differential equations. They appear in various physical systems, such as water waves, light waves in optical fiber, and matter waves. In our laboratory, we study solitons and their interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive nonlinearity, trapped in a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide. We investigate the collisions of a pair of solitons and explore the relative phase implications on the boundary of integrability. We study soliton train formation with the quench of the nonlinearity strength, and interactions between neighboring solitons in the train. We form a composite soliton, known as a breather, where multiple solitons overlap and the wavefunction ``breathes'' in time. We also explore the response of an elongated condensate to an external modulation of the nonlinearity. These experiments characterize the mean-field descriptions of solitons and Bose-Einstein condensates and explore the boundaries between the mean-field theory and quantum many-body theory.

Periodic waves in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

A. M. Kamchatnov

Periodic waves in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate are considered with allowance for mixing of components admitted by the interaction between atoms. The possibility of relative motion of the components leads to significant variability of the system dynamics as compared to the case of a single-component condensate. In particular, it was experimentally established that, if one component flows relative to another, waves with counterphase oscillations of the components can be excited in the two-component condensate. A theory of one-phase periodic waves is developed for the case of weak mixing of the components, in which the condensate dynamics is described with sufficiently good precision by a system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with equal constants of nonlinear interaction between atoms both of the same and different kinds. Both condensates with repulsive and attractive interactions between atoms are considered. The limiting case of waves with constant amplitude is studied in detail. The structure of soliton analogs in these systems is considered. The possibility of applying the proposed theory to description of experimentally observed wavy periodic structures in two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is discussed.

The Dynamics of Vector Soliton in Heteronuclear Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Xueli Feng

We have numerically studied the head-on collisions of the bright-bright solitons and bright-dark solitons with different relative phases, based on Gross-Pitaevskii(GP) equation of the quasi-one-dimensional heteronuclear two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. If there is no external potential well, the relative phase zc leads to elastic collision of the bright-bright solitons, but they collide with each other accompanied by some energy transfer for the relative phase π /2. If there is external potential well, they collide periodically with the relative phase π, but with the relative phase π /2, the two solitons combine to one soliton after collision with energy escape. For the bright-dark solitons, their bright-bright solitons in the first component collide periodically with the relative phase 0 or π. The difference of them is that the former has one collision point, the latter two collision points. Furthermore, we have found that the bright-bright solitons are always stable and the bright-dark solitons are unstable by solving its co~esponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations.

Interference properties of two-component matter wave solitons

Yan-Hong Qin, Yong Wu, Li-Chen Zhao +1 more

Wave properties of solitons in a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate are investigated in detail. We demonstrate that dark solitons in one of components admit interference and tunneling behavior, in sharp contrast to the scalar dark solitons and vector dark solitons. Analytic analyses of interference properties show that spatial interference patterns are determined by the relative velocity of solitons, while temporal interference patterns depend on the velocities and widths of two solitons, differing from the interference properties of scalar bright solitons. Especially, for an attractive interactions system, we show that interference effects between the two dark solitons can induce some short-time density humps (whose densities are higher than background density). Moreover, the maximum hump value is remarkably sensitive to the variation of the solitons’ parameters. For a repulsive interactions system, the temporal-spatial interference periods of dark–bright solitons have lower limits. Numerical simulation results suggest that interference patterns for the dark–bright solitons are more robust against noises than bright–dark solitons. These explicit interference properties can be used to measure the velocities and widths of solitons. It is expected that these interference behaviors can be observed experimentally and can be used to design matter wave soliton interferometer in vector systems.

Soliton collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

Qian Jia, Haibo Qiu, Antonio Muñoz Mateo

We study general collisions between chiral solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates subject to combined attractive and current-dependent interatomic interactions. A simple analysis based on the linear superposition of the solitons allows us to determine the relevant time and space scales of the dynamics, which is illustrated by extensive numerical simulations. By varying the differential amplitude, the relative phase, the average velocity, and the relative velocity of the solitons, we characterize the different dynamical regimes that give rise to oscillatory and interference phenomena. Apart from the known inelastic character of the collisions, we show that the chiral dynamics involves an amplitude reduction with respect to the case of regular solitons. To compare these results with feasible ultracold-gas experiments, the influence of harmonic confinement is analyzed in both the emergence and the interaction of chiral solitons.
