Coherent control of a superconducting qubit with dynamically tunable qubit-cavity coupling

Anthony J. Hoffman, Srikanth J. Srinivasan, Jay Gambetta +1 more

We demonstrate coherent control and measurement of a superconducting qubit coupled to a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator with a dynamically tunable qubit-cavity coupling strength. Rabi oscillations are measured for several coupling strengths showing that the qubit transition can be turned off by a factor of more than 1500. We show how the qubit can still be accessed in the off state via fast flux pulses. We perform pulse delay measurements with synchronized fast flux pulses on the device and observe ${T}_{1}$ and ${T}_{2}$ times of 1.6 and 1.9 $\ensuremath{\mu}$s, respectively. This work demonstrates how this qubit can be incorporated into quantum architectures.

Qubit Architecture with High Coherence and Fast Tunable Coupling

Yu Chen, C. Neill, P. Roushan +20 more

We introduce a superconducting qubit architecture that combines high-coherence qubits and tunable qubit-qubit coupling. With the ability to set the coupling to zero, we demonstrate that this architecture is protected from the frequency crowding problems that arise from fixed coupling. More importantly, the coupling can be tuned dynamically with nanosecond resolution, making this architecture a versatile platform with applications ranging from quantum logic gates to quantum simulation. We illustrate the advantages of dynamical coupling by implementing a novel adiabatic controlled-z gate, with a speed approaching that of single-qubit gates. Integrating coherence and scalable control, the introduced qubit architecture provides a promising path towards large-scale quantum computation and simulation.

Fine-Structure Qubit Encoded in Metastable Strontium Trapped in an Optical Lattice

Sebastian Pucher, V. Klüsener, F. Spriestersbach +4 more

We demonstrate coherent control of the fine-structure qubit in neutral strontium atoms. This qubit is encoded in the metastable ^{3}P_{2} and ^{3}P_{0} states, coupled by a Raman transition. Using a magnetic quadrupole transition, we demonstrate coherent state initialization of this THz qubit. We show Rabi oscillations with more than 60 coherent cycles and single-qubit rotations on the μs scale. With spin echo, we demonstrate coherence times of tens of ms. Our results pave the way for fast quantum information processors and highly tunable quantum simulators with two-electron atoms.
