Abstract

We theoretically investigate the orientation of the cold KRb molecules in a weak electrostatic field assisted by a shaped laser pulse. The results show that the slow turn-on and rapid turn-off laser pulse can enhance the molecular orientation of KRb significantly, and a high degree of molecular orientation of more than 0.9 can be obtained when the electrostatic field is as low as 3kV/cm. In addition, the influences of the electrostatic field strength and the parameters of the laser pulse are studied in detail.

Orientation of KRb molecules in a switched electrostatic field

Yunxia Huang, Shuwu Xu, Xiao-Hua Yang

We theoretically investigate the orientation of the cold KRb molecules induced in a switched electrostatic field by numerically solving the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The results show that the periodic field-free molecular orientation can be realized for the KRb molecules by rapidly switching off the electrostatic field. Meanwhile, by varying the switching times of the electrostatic field, the adiabatic and nonadiabatic interactions of the molecules with the applied field can be realized. Moreover, the influences of the electrostatic field strength and the rotational temperature to the degree of the molecular orientation are studied. The investigations show that increasing the electrostatic field will increase the degree of the molecular orientation, both in the constant-field regime and in the field-free regime, while the increasing of the rotational temperature of the cold molecules will greatly decrease the degree of the molecular orientation.

Optimal field-free orientation of molecules with resonant tailored multicolor fields

Jinping Zhang, Shuo Wang, Niels E. Henriksen

Optimal field-free molecular orientation for a given number of populated states, achieved by using resonant laser pulses, is theoretically investigated for linear molecules. An optimal phase difference between the rotational states can be obtained, at full revival times, after the laser pulses have decayed and these phase conditions are analytically derived for multilevel systems ($J>2$). The dependence of the phase difference on the duration and absolute area of the laser pulses is analyzed. Finally, the optimal degree of molecular orientation can be obtained by adjusting the ratios of the peak amplitudes of the laser pulses, with the carrier-envelope phases or the delay time between the pulses fulfilling the phase conditions.

Efficient photoassociation with a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off laser field

Wei Zhang, Yin Hui Huang, Ting Xie +2 more

We present a theoretical scheme used for investigating the formation of ultracold molecules via photoassociation with a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off (STRT) laser pulse, with Cs${}_{2}$ as an example. As compared with an unshaped laser pulse, this kind of shaped laser pulse has a prominent advantage by which we can prevent the associated molecules from returning to the initial scattering state. Numerical calculations show that an efficient photoassociation can be realized with the STRT laser pulse, which is available in the current experiment as an optical tool.

Probing Weakly Bound Molecules with Nonresonant Light

Mikhail Lemeshko, Břetislav Friedrich

We show that weakly bound molecules can be probed by "shaking" in a pulsed nonresonant laser field. The field introduces a centrifugal term which expels the highest vibrational level from the potential that binds it. Our numerical simulations applied to the Rb(2) and KRb Feshbach molecules indicate that shaking by feasible laser pulses can be used to accurately recover the square of the vibrational wave function and, by inversion, also the long-range part of the molecular potential.

Orientation of molecules with a small dipole moment using cyclic wave packets

Juan Ortigoso, Júlio César Santos Júnior

A robust and versatile method is demonstrated to maintain, for an arbitrary time, quasiconstant and strong orientation for molecules with minute dipole moments. The procedure is based on submitting molecules in cyclic wave packets to periodic trains of nonresonant pulses in an electrostatic field. We show that approximate cyclic states can be created by suddenly switching off a long laser pulse. A control scheme to remove the static field without spoiling orientation is suggested, which would permit large field-free orientation between pulses.
