Five-body van der Waals interactions

Jianing Han

We report on the five-body repulsive and attractive van der Waals interactions between the strongly dipole-dipole coupled Rydberg states. Compared to four-body van der Waals interactions, five-body van der Waals interactions show more energy levels and more potential wells caused by avoided crossings. This research bridges the few-body physics and many-body physics. Other disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, and medical fields, will also benefit from better understanding van der Waals interactions.

van der Waals interaction as the starting point for an effective field theory

Daniel Odell, Arnoldas Deltuva, Lucas Platter

We consider the system of three $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms to assess whether a pure van der Waals potential can be used as a starting point for an effective field theory to describe three-body processes in ultracold atomic systems. Using a long-range van der Waals interaction in combination with short-distance two-body counterterms, we analyze the dependence of two- and three-body observables on the short-distance regulator that is required due to the singular nature of the van der Waals interaction. We benchmark our approach with results obtained with the realistic $^{4}\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{-}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ LM2M2 potential and find good agreement. We furthermore show that in this effective field theory approach no three-body force is required at leading order and that universal van der Waals physics leads to a universal correlation between three-body observables in the absence of an Efimov three-body parameter.

van der Waals interactions between excited atoms in generic environments

Pablo Barcellona, Roberto Passante, Lucia Rizzuto +1 more

We consider the van der Waals force involving excited atoms in general environments, constituted by magnetodielectric bodies. We develop a dynamical approach studying the dynamics of the atoms and the field, mutually coupled. When only one atom is excited, our dynamical theory suggests that for large distances the van der Waals force acting on the ground-state atom is monotonic, while the force acting in the excited atom is spatially oscillating. We show how this latter force can be related to the known oscillating Casimir-Polder force on an excited atom near a (ground-state) body. Our force also reveals a population-induced dynamics: for times much larger that the atomic lifetime the atoms will decay to their ground states leading to the van der Waals interaction between ground-state atoms.
