Abstract

It is pointed out that a recent work by Nakaichi et al. on few-atom /sup 3/He--/sup 4/He mixed molecules is based on incorrect values of THETA/sup 2//M/sub 3/ and THETA/sup 2//M/sub 4/, where M/sub 3/ and M/sub 4/ are the masses of the /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He atoms. This is shown to affect their conclusion on the /sup 3/He(/sup 4/He)/sub 2/ system seriously.

Comment on ‘‘Few-atom 3He–4He mixed molecules’’

M. Harada

It is pointed out that a recent work by Nakaichi et al. on few-atom 3He–4He mixed molecules is based on incorrect values of Θ2/M3 and Θ2/M4, where M3 and M4 are the masses of the 3He and 4He atoms. This is shown to affect their conclusion on the 3He(4He)2 system seriously.

The binding energy of /sup 3/He(/sup 4/He)/sub 2/ is recalculated with more correct h/sup 2//M values. The Smith-Thakkar, HFDHE2, and mDD-2 potentials ensure its binding, while the Beck, Lennard-Jones, and ESMMSV potentials do not.

All-optical Bose-Einstein condensation of chromium atoms and rf spectroscopy of cold Cr{sub 2} molecules

Quentin Beaufils, Radu Chicireanu, T. Zanon-Willette +5 more

Full text: The study of quantum gases made of chromium atoms is compelling for several reasons. Being accessible to laser manipulation, chromium has a most abundant bosonic isotope {sup 52}Cr and a 9-percent abundant fermionic isotope {sup 53}Cr. Most importantly, Cr atoms carry an exceptionally large magnetic moment of 6 {mu}{sub B}. Consequently, Cr provides a valuable tool to study the physics of dipolar quantum gases as demonstrated elsewhere. We present our recent achievement of a chromium Bose-Einstein Condensation (Cr-BEC) using an all-optical procedure along with two innovative techniques: continuous accumulation of metastable {sup 52}Cr atoms in a mixed optical and magnetic trap; fast and intense rf sweeps to average to zero the magnetic potential and optimize the transfer efficiency from the Cr-MOT to the optical trap. We also report on the rf spectroscopy and association of weakly bound Cr{sub 2} molecules in the decatriplet {sup 13}{sigma}{sub g}{sup +} state. These latter experiments are performed in the vicinity of a d-wave Feshbach resonance at low magnetic field. Though the association rate is at present fairly low, we can study the spectroscopic properties of these cold trapped high-spin chromium molecules. (author)

The influence of a second resonance on the saturation characteristics of the four-wave sum mixing

E. Koudoumas, Thomas Efthimiopoulos

Experimental results are presented, related to the saturation mechanisms of the four-wave sum mixing (4-WSM) generation in Hg when a double resonance enhancement is employed, that is, a two photon resonance to the /spl delta//sup 1/S/sub 0/ state followed by the /spl delta//sup 1/S/sub 0/-6p'/sup 3/D/sub 1/ one photon coupling. This coupling is shown to alter the saturation characteristics of the four-wave sum mixing radiation by affecting the two-photon excitation to the /spl delta//sup 1/S/sub 0/ state, reduce the ionization of the Hg atoms by the incoming radiation and create an absorption window for the generated radiation in a region near the autoionizing state by modifying the linear susceptibility.>
