On the formation of white-light interference fringes

Attila Pál Kovács, Katalin Varjú, K. Osvay +1 more

We describe an experiment in which the white-light interference fringes appearing at the output of a Michelson interferometer are observed through a spectrograph. In this manner the relative positions of monochromatic interference fringes come into sight and it allows a better understanding of the formation of the white-light fringes. A simple model is described for determining the shape of the spectrally resolved white-light interference fringes. An expression for the relationship between the slope of the fringes and the arm length difference of the interferometer is derived and is demonstrated experimentally. In addition, an intuitive explanation based on this experiment is given for the washing out of the white-light fringes.

Visibility parameters in Young's interference experiment with unpolarized light

Philippe Réfrégier, Antoine Roueff, Jani Tervo

We analyze the recently introduced Polarization contrast parameters and their relation to degrees of coherence in electromagnetic Young's interference experiment in the case of unpolarized illumination. We show that in the general case only two of the parameters can be made non-vanishing if suitable unitary transformations are applied to the field at pinholes. The result implies elegant relations between the contrast parameters and the intrinsic degrees of coherence in the case of unpolarized light at pinholes.

Simulation of Thomas Young dual-slit interference experiment using MatLab

Haiying Cui

Employing with MatLab, the relative light density distribution of Thomas Young dual-slit interference experiment is presented. This paper analyzes the light density distribution of Thomas Young dual-slit interference under different wavelengths and slit widths, and explains the causes for the different light density distribution in Thomas Young dual-slit interference. It reaches that slit widths are the factors for the uneven intensity distribution of Thomas Young dual-slit interference experiment, and the fringe width is inversely proportional to slit widths. Various parameters impacting on the interference is visually analyzed by means of computer simulation. It has an important guiding role on the optical theoretical study and experimental teaching.
