Abstract

The spontaneous emission properties of a Λ_type atom embedded in anisotropic photonic crystals are investigated. We find that the dynamical properties of the atom and the propagating characteristics of the radiation field are obviously influenced by the relative position of the upper level from the forbidden gap and the space between the two lower levels. With the help of numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, we plot the evolution of the total radiation field and its components with the time. Furthermore, we also study the influence of photonic crystals on radiative properties of the atom by means of spontaneous emission spectrum.

Dynamic and radiative properties of a Λ-type driven atom in anisotropic photonic crystals

Xianshan Huang, Yaping Yang

Dynamic and radiative properties of a Λ-type atom embedded in a three-dimensional anisotropic photonic crystal with a driven field are investigated. The time-evolution properties of the atom and the characteristics of the emission field are greatly affected by the position of the upper level relative to the forbidden gap. Also studied are the influence of the intensity of the external field, the detuning from resonant frequency, and the background decay parameter on the dynamic properties of the atom. The energy of the propagation field is translated partly into the form of the diffusion field during the propagating process. The spectra of the propagation component and diffusive component are dependent on the distance from the atom.

Dynamic properties of a Λ-type atom embedded in photonic crystal

Huang Xian-Shan, Yang Ya-Ping, 同济大学物理系,上海 200092

The dynamical properties and spectrum characteristics of a Λ-type atom with an external field embedded in three-dimensional photonic crystals are investigated . With the help of numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, we find that the populations of the upper and lower levels display quasi-oscillation, and the frequency and amplitude of the oscillation is greatly affected by the intensity of the external-driving field Ω, the detuning δ and the background decay of the upper level γ. Spontaneous emission of the atom is apparently influenced by the relative position of the upper level from the forbidden gap. Furthermore, the properties of the emission field around the atom are analyzed by means of s pontaneous emission spectrum.

The radiative characteristics and the decay properties of an excitedΛ-type atom in anisotropic photonic crystals

Yaping Yang, Xianshan Huang

The radiative characteristics and the decay properties of a Λ-type excited atom embedded in anisotropic photonic crystals are studied. It is found that the dynamic properties of the atom and the propagating characteristics of the emitted field are apparently influenced by the relative position of the upper level from the forbidden gap and the two lower levels. By Von Neumann measurement, the effects of measurements on the decaying atom are investigated. The frequent projection on the excited state can lead to decay suppression or an acceleration effect at rather low repetition rates, depending on the frequency of measurements and the relative position of the upper level from the photonic crystals band edge.

Spontaneous emission from a two-level atom in two-band anisotropic photonic crystals

Yaping Yang, Michael Fleischhauer, Shi-Yao Zhu

We investigate the spontaneous radiation from a two-level atom embedded in a three-dimensional anisotropic photonic crystal with two bands. The properties of the spontaneous emission are dependent strongly on the position of the upper level. The faster and slower decay components can occur in the emitted field, but it does not mean the existence of both accelerated and inhibited components for the atomic population decay. The radiation spectrum is dependent on the location of the observer. We also study the influence of the existence of the two bands on spontaneous emission, Lamb shift, the emitted field, and the radiation spectrum.

Spontaneous emission from Λ-type three-level atom driven by bichromatic field in anisotropic double-band photonic crystals

Kai Ling, Jiang Li, Ren-Gang Wan +1 more

The spontaneous emission property of Λ-type three-level atom driven by the bichromatic field in the anisotropic double-band photonic crystal is calculated by n-times iteration method. The influence of different parameters on atomic spontaneous emission is studied, and the phenomena of atomic spontaneous emission are explained in the dressed state representation. It is found that the spontaneous emission spectra of the atom driven by the bichromatic field presents a multi-peak comb structure. The position of the emission peak is determined by the initial state of the atom, and the interval between the neighboring emission peaks is the detuning δ of the bichromatic field. When the ratio between Rabi frequency intensity and the detuning δ of the bichromatic field remains unchanged, the intensity of each emitted peak remains invariant. The spontaneously emitted peak can be annihilated in the band gap and enhanced near the band edge in the anisotropic photonic crystals. Meanwhile, we also observe the fluorescence quenching phenomenon in the spontaneous emission spectra. The research in this paper provides the theoretical guidance for the control of atomic spontaneous emission.

Spontaneous emission and radiation properties of a driven four-level atom embedded in an anisotropic PBG

Jiang Li, Han Zhang, Hanzhuang Zhang

The spontaneous emission from a driven four-level tripod atom embedded in an anisotropic photonic crystal is investigated in this paper. We find that time-evolution properties and components of the emitted fields are dependent on the relative position of the upper level of the atom from the band edge and the space between two lower levels. The radiation field emitted by the atom is calculated more accurately. The energy is translated from one form to another with the increase of distance from the atom and the upper level's relative position. The evolution properties and the spontaneous spectrum are also studied. The results analyzed here are consistent with the distribution of emitted fields.
