Manipulation of pancake vortices by rotating a Josephson vortex lattice

Adrian Crisan, Simon John Bending, T. Tamegai

Scanning Hall probe microscopy has been used to demonstrate the manipulation of pancake vortices by rotating the Josephson vortex lattice in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta single crystals in the interacting crossing lattices regime. Creation of one-dimensional pancake vortex chains trapped on Josephson vortices, and the subsequent rotation of the chains were realized by independently controlling magnetic fields in three orthogonal directions. The anisotropy parameter determined from the in-plane distances between vortex chains in various in-plane fields is consistent with commonly accepted values.

Photon-induced vortex-antivortex pair creation in superconducting films

Joseph Philip Walko, S. Rao, Dale J. Van Harlingen

We have used a DC SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) gradiometer to study vortex-antivortex pair creation in both two-dimensional superconducting films and Josephson junction arrays in the presence of 850 nm light irradiation. Specifically the experiments aim to distinguish between the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs by single-photon absorption and by thermal activation. A major objective for this experiment is to investigate the possibility of using vortex-antivortex pair creation and subsequent detection as the basis for a photon detector.
