First-Principles Study of the Honeycomb-Lattice Iridates Na2IrO3 in the Presence of Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction and Electron Correlations

Youhei Yamaji, Yusuke Nomura, Moyuru Kurita +2 more

An effective low-energy Hamiltonian of itinerant electrons for iridium oxide Na2IrO3 is derived by an ab initio downfolding scheme. The model is then reduced to an effective spin model on a honeycomb lattice by the strong coupling expansion. Here we show that the ab initio model contains spin-spin anisotropic exchange terms in addition to the extensively studied Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and allows us to describe the experimentally observed zigzag magnetic order, interpreted as the state stabilized by the antiferromagnetic coupling of the ferromagnetic chains. We clarify possible routes to realize quantum spin liquids from existing Na2IrO3.

Permutation blocking path integral Monte Carlo: a highly efficient approach to the simulation of strongly degenerate non-ideal fermions

Tobias Dornheim, Simon Groth, Alexey V. Filinov +1 more

Correlated fermions are of high interest in condensed matter (Fermi liquids, Wigner molecules), cold atomic gases and dense plasmas. Here we propose a novel approach to path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations of strongly degenerate non-ideal fermions at finite temperature by combining a fourth-order factorization of the density matrix with antisymmetric propagators, i.e., determinants, between all imaginary time slices. To efficiently run through the modified configuration space, we introduce a modification of the widely used continuous space worm algorithm, which allows for an efficient sampling at arbitrary system parameters. We demonstrate how the application of determinants achieves an effective blocking of permutations with opposite signs, leading to a significant relieve of the fermion sign problem. To benchmark the capability of our method regarding the simulation of degenerate fermions, we consider multiple electrons in a quantum dot and compare our results with other ab initio techniques, where they are available. The present permutation blocking PIMC approach allows us to obtain accurate results even for N = 20 electrons at low temperature and arbitrary coupling, where no other ab initio results have been reported, so far.

Ab-Initio Study of Interacting Fermions at Finite Temperature with Neural Canonical Transformation

Hao Xie, Linfeng Zhang, Lei Wang

We present a variational density matrix approach to the thermal properties of interacting fermions in the continuum. The variational density matrix is parametrized by a permutation equivariant many-body unitary transformation together with a discrete probabilistic model. The unitary transformation is implemented as a quantum counterpart of neural canonical transformation, which incorporates correlation effects via a flow of fermion coordinates. As the first application, we study electrons in a two-dimensional quantum dot with an interaction-induced crossover from Fermi liquid to Wigner molecule. The present approach provides accurate results in the low-temperature regime, where conventional quantum Monte Carlo methods face severe difficulties due to the fermion sign problem. The approach is general and flexible for further extensions, thus holds the promise to deliver new physical results on strongly correlated fermions in the context of ultracold quantum gases, condensed matter, and warm dense matter physics.
