Abstract

The method of path integral is employed to calculate the time evolution of the eigenstates of a charged particle under the Fock—Darwin (FD) Hamiltonian subjected to a time-dependent electric field in the plane of the system. An exact analytical expression is established for the evolution of the eigenstates. This result then provides a general solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Evolution of squeezed states under the Fock-Darwin Hamiltonian

Jaime E. Santos, Nuno M. R. Peres, J. M. B. Lopes dos Santos

We develop a complete analytical description of the time evolution of squeezed states of a charged particle under the Fock-Darwin (FD) Hamiltonian and a time-dependent electric field. This result generalizes a relation obtained by Infeld and Pleba\ifmmode \acute{n}\else \'{n}\fi{}ski for states of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator. We relate the evolution of a state-vector subjected to squeezing to that of state which is not subjected to squeezing and for which the time evolution under the simple harmonic oscillator dynamics is known (e.g., an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian). A corresponding relation is also established for the Wigner functions of the states, in view of their utility in the analysis of cold-ion experiments. In Appendix A, we compute the response functions of the FD Hamiltonian to an external electric field, using the same techniques as in the main text.

Constrained parameters and exact solution of Schrödinger equation of charged particle in a time-dependent electric field: A unitary transformation approach

Rachid Ahmim, Nabil Baouche, S. Askri

We present an exact analytical solution for the quantum dynamics of a charged particle subjected to both a time-dependent electric field and a static magnetic field aligned along the $$z$$ -direction. Using a systematic approach based on successive unitary transformations, we reduce the original three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional system of decoupled, time-dependent harmonic oscillators. This technique produces free parameters that allow us to impose constrains to derive the exact solution of Schrödinger equation with the time-dependent Hamiltonian through the explicit derivation of the quantum propagator and shows the equivalence of this approach to established path integral methods for such systems. The developed framework provides new insights into quantum systems with time-dependent electromagnetic fields and offers analytical solutions.

An Exact Quantum Theory of the Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and of a Charged Particle in a Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Field

Harry R. Lewis, W. B. Riesenfeld

The theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants is developed for quantum systems whose Hamiltonians are explicitly time dependent. The central feature of the discussion is the derivation of a simple relation between eigenstates of such an invariant and solutions of the Schrödinger equation. As a specific well-posed application of the general theory, the case of a general Hamiltonian which settles into constant operators in the sufficiently remote past and future is treated and, in particular, the transition amplitude connecting any initial state in the remote past to any final state in the remote future is calculated in terms of eigenstates of the invariant. Two special physical systems are treated in detail: an arbitrarily time-dependent harmonic oscillator and a charged particle moving in the classical, axially symmetric electromagnetic field consisting of an arbitrarily time-dependent, uniform magnetic field, the associated induced electric field, and the electric field due to an arbitrarily time-dependent uniform charge distribution. A class of explicitly time-dependent invariants is derived for both of these systems, and the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the invariants are calculated explicitly by operator methods. The explicit connection between these eigenstates and solutions of the Schrödinger equation is also calculated. The results for the oscillator are used to obtain explicit formulas for the transition amplitude. The usual sudden and adiabatic approximations are deduced as limiting cases of the exact formulas.

Solution of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential

I. Guedes

In this paper I have drawn out the steps to be followed in order to derive the exact Schr\"odinger wave function for a particle in a general one-dimensional time-dependent linear potential. To this end I have used the so-called Lewis and Riesenfeld invariant method, which is based on finding an exact quantum-mechanical invariant in whose eigenstates the exact quantum states are found. In particular, I have obtained the wave functions of a particle in the linear potential well, driven by a monochromatic electric field.
