Generation and reconstruction of Schrodinger cat states of light in a cavity by quantum nondemolition measurements

I. Dotsenko, S. Deléglise, C. Sayrin +4 more

Application of the quantum nondemolition (QND) method to Schrodinger cat states is described. Phase cat states of trapped light is generated by QND measurement of the photon number parity of a coherent field initially injected into the cavity. The measured Wigner function of a cat state at four different delays between preparation and measurement is presented. The Wigner function exhibits two positive, ideally Gaussian, peaks corresponding to the two classical components of the state. Quantitative analysis of the decoherence process is also presented. Generalization of this experiment to the preparation of non-local cat states located at the same time between two different cavities is discussed.

A Schrödinger cat living in two boxes

Chen Wang, Yvonne Y. Gao, Philip Reinhold +13 more

Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states," have been an elegant demonstration of Schrödinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum nondemolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multicavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

I will describe recent experiments where we store quantum information in Schrodinger cat states of a microwave cavity, and perform the first continuous observation of a quantum error syndrome, based on the photon number parity.
