Abstract

A study of the 6/sup 3/P/sub 1/ level of isotope pairs of Mg by magnetic resonance methods leads to the determination of a coherence time'' which is much longer than the duration of the life of the level. At very low vapor densities, the coherence time'' approaches the level lifetime. Experimental resilts verified that the coherence time'' is dependent only on the number of diffusing atoms and on the obseved hypefiine level and that it approaches the level lifetime. (J.S.R.)

LIFETIME OF THE 6$sup 3$P$sub 1$ EXCITED STATE OF MERCURY VAPOR FOR THE ISOTOPES WITH EVEN AND ODD MASSES

J.-L. Cojan, M. Thibeau

The measurement of the absorption of a parallel light beam from a resonance lamp by an absorption tube filled with mercury vapor leads to the determination ot the lifetime of the 6/sup 3/P/sub 1/ excited state of mercury. The same value ( lambda = 1.16 x 10/sup -7/ sec) was found for all the isoiopes of mercury. (tr-auth)

A New "Double Resonance" Method for Investigating Atomic Energy Levels. Application to Hg P 1 3

J. Brossel, Francis Bitter

Excitation of atoms in a vapor by polarized light produces unequal population of the magnetic sublevels of the excited state. The emitted optical resonance radiation is therefore partly polarized. The application of radiofrequency or microwave fields at a magnetic resonance frequency will induce transitions between sublevels of the excited state. The degree of polarization of the emitted optical resonance radiation is altered when the magnetic resonance condition is fulfilled. As suggested by Brossel and Kastler, this effect may be used to reveal the structure of the energy level. A detailed theory applicable to, and experiments on the $^{3}P_{1}$ state of all the isotopes of mercury are reported. The results obtained indicate that double resonance phenomena constitute a valuable new tool for investigating the structure of atomic energy levels. The mean life of the $^{3}P_{1}$ state is shown by observations on the resonance line widths to be 1.55\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ sec for all the isotopes. The $g$-factor of the $^{3}P_{1}$ state for isotopes with zero spin, measured in terms of the proton $g$-factor, is 1.4838\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0004.

Identification of optical magnetic resonances generated in a neon discharge by coherent transitions of spatially separated isotopically different atoms

Э. Г. Сапрыкин

Infrared (IR) transitions are identified in the neon spectrum in the range 0.76-15.8 μm, they generate resonances due to quadrature field synchronization of spatially separated isotopically different atoms. The use of numerical methods for the analysis of low-contrast IR resonances made it possible to estimate the previously unknown isotopic shifts of their parent transitions levels. A change in the amplitude sign of quadrature optical-magnetic resonances with a change in the isotopic shift sign of the transitions that generate them is found, and the dependence of the lifetime of such coherent atom pairs on the transitions wavelength is recorded, showing an unusual reaching the plateau as the wavelength decreases. It is assumed that this is due to expansion of the response time of the neighboring excited atoms of the isotopic pair to their fields interference. Keywords: neon, IR transitions, field interference, coherent atom pairs.
