Dynamics near the critical point: The hot renormalization group in quantum field theory

D. Boyanovsky, Hector J. de Vega

The perturbative approach to the description of long-wavelength excitations at high temperature breaks down near the critical point of a second order phase transition. We study the dynamics of these excitations in a relativistic scalar field theory at and near the critical point via a renormalization group approach at high temperature and an $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ expansion in $d=5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ space-time dimensions. The long-wavelength physics is determined by a nontrivial fixed point of the renormalization group. At the critical point we find that the dispersion relation and width of quasiparticles of momentum p are ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}\ensuremath{\sim}{p}^{z}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}\ensuremath{\sim}(z\ensuremath{-}1){\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p},$ respectively, and the group velocity of quasiparticles ${v}_{g}\ensuremath{\sim}{p}^{z\ensuremath{-}1}$ vanishes in the long-wavelength limit at the critical point. Away from the critical point for $T\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{T}_{c}$ we find ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}z}[1+(p\ensuremath{\xi}{)}^{2z}{]}^{1/2}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}\ensuremath{\sim}(z\ensuremath{-}1){\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}(p\ensuremath{\xi}{)}^{2z}/[1+(p\ensuremath{\xi}{)}^{2z}]$ with $\ensuremath{\xi}$ the finite temperature correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\propto}|T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\nu}}.$ The new dynamical exponent z results from anisotropic renormalization in the spatial and time directions. For a theory with $O(N)$ symmetry we find $z=1+\ensuremath{\epsilon}{(N+2)/(N+8)}^{2}+\mathcal{O}({\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{2}).$ This dynamical critical exponent describes a new universality class for dynamical critical phenomena in quantum field theory. Critical slowing down, i.e., a vanishing width in the long-wavelength limit, and the validity of the quasiparticle picture emerge naturally from this analysis.

Anomalous quasiparticle lifetime in geometric quantum critical metals

Hao Song, Han Ma, Catherine Kallin +1 more

Metals can undergo geometric quantum phase transitions where the local curvature of the Fermi surface changes sign without a change in symmetry or topology. At the inflection points on the Fermi surface, the local curvature vanishes, leading to an anomalous dynamics of quasiparticles. In this paper, we study geometric quantum critical metals that support inflection points in two dimensions, and show that the decay rate of quasiparticles goes as $E^α$ with $1<α<2$ as a function of quasiparticle energy $E$ at the inflection points.

Fluctuating stripes in strongly correlated electron systems and the nematic-smectic quantum phase transition

Kai Sun, Benjamin M. Fregoso, Michael J. Lawler +1 more

We discuss the quantum phase transition between a quantum nematic metallic state to an electron metallic smectic state in terms of an order-parameter theory coupled to fermionic quasiparticles. Both commensurate and incommensurate smectic (or stripe) cases are studied. Close to the quantum critical point (QCP), the spectrum of fluctuations of the nematic phase has low-energy ``fluctuating stripes.'' We study the quantum critical behavior and find evidence that, contrary to the classical case, the gauge-type of coupling between the nematic and smectic is irrelevant at this QCP. The collective modes of the electron smectic (or stripe) phase are also investigated. The effects of the low-energy bosonic modes on the fermionic quasiparticles are studied perturbatively, for both a model with full rotational symmetry and for a system with an underlying lattice, which has a discrete point group symmetry. We find that at the nematic-smectic critical point, due to the critical smectic fluctuations, the dynamics of the fermionic quasiparticles near several points on the Fermi surface, around which it is reconstructed, are not governed by a Landau Fermi liquid theory. Surprisingly, the quasiparticles in the smectic phase also exhibit non-Fermi liquid behavior. We also present a detailed analysis of the dynamical susceptibilities in the electron nematic phase close to this QCP (the fluctuating stripe regime) and in the electronic smectic phase.
