Universal energy functionals for trapped Fermi gases in low dimensions

Jiansen Zhang, Shina Tan

We study a system of trapped two-component Fermi gases with a zero-range interaction in two dimensions or one dimension. We calculate the one-particle density matrices of these systems at small displacements, from which we show that the $N$-body energies are linear functionals of the occupation probabilities of single-particle energy eigenstates. A universal energy functional was first derived in 2011 [S. Tan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 145302 (2011)] for trapped zero-range interacting two-component Fermi gases in three dimensions. We also calculate the asymptotic behaviors of the occupation probabilities of single-particle energy eigenstates at high energies.

Virial expansion for a three-component Fermi gas in one dimension: The quantum anomaly correspondence

Jeff Maki, CARLOS R. ORDÓÑEZ

In this paper we explore the transport properties of three-component Fermi gases confined to one spatial dimension, interacting via a three-body interaction, in the high temperature limit. At the classical level, the three-body interaction is scale invariant in one dimension. However, upon quantization, an anomaly appears which breaks the scale invariance. This is very similar to the physics of two-component fermions in two spatial dimensions, where the two-body interaction is also anomalous. Previous studies have already hinted that the physics of these two systems are intimately related. Here we expand upon those studies by examining the thermodynamic properties of this anomalous one-dimensional system in the high temperature limit. We show there is an exact mapping between the traditional two-body anomalous interaction in two dimensions, to that of three-body interaction in one dimension. This result is valid in the high temperature limit, where the thermodynamics can be understood in terms of few-body correlations.

Analytical thermodynamics of a strongly attractive three-component Fermi gas in one dimension

Peng He, Xiangguo Yin, Xi‐Wen Guan +2 more

Ultracold three-component atomic Fermi gases in one dimension are expected to exhibit rich physics due to the presence of trions and different pairing states. Quantum phase transitions from the trion state into a paired phase and a normal Fermi liquid occur at zero temperature. We derive the analytical thermodynamics of strongly attractive three-component one-dimensional fermions with SU(3) symmetry via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method in unequal Zeeman splitting fields ${H}_{1}$ and ${H}_{2}$. We find explicitly that for low temperature the system acts like either a two-component or a three-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid dependent on the system parameters. The phase diagrams for the chemical potential and specific heat are presented for illustrative values of the Zeeman splitting. We also demonstrate that crossover between different Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid phases exhibit singular behavior in specific heat and entropy as the temperature tends to zero. Beyond Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid physics, we obtain the equation of state which provides a precise description of universal thermodynamics and quantum criticality in three-component, strongly attractive Fermi gases.
