Coherent characteristics of superconducting closed loop composed of Josephson junctions

Tadayuki Kobayashi, Nobuyoshi Kondo, Katsuyoshi Hamasaki +1 more

Abstract When the impedance of a Josephson junction is too low, the elements are connected in series. We connected two arrays with N series elements of Josephson junctions each (denoted 2N‐JJ loop) and tried to find conditions for it to operate coherently by investigating voltage‐current curves. the computer simulation showed that coherent operation is easier with this circuit than with a series connection of the elements when the elements have different junction parameters. Pb‐alloy tunnel‐type junctions were produced which have N = 2 and 3, and we found that voltage steps generated by application of rf current with frequency F have a voltige interval corresponding to NF. This agrees with the simulation results and indicates coherent operation.

Terahertz oscillator of superconducting planar Josephson junction array

Pei Wang, Wenshuai Wang, Hongwei Gao +1 more

This paper describes an array of superconducting planar Josephson junctions (JJs) for terahertz emission. The JJs with bowtie antennae are fabricated with superconducting thin film deposited on the bicrystal dielectric substrate and connected in series by superconducting striplines. The dielectric substrate is regarded as a dielectric resonator to improve the electromagnetic coupling between the JJs for coherent terahertz emission. With the CST electromagnetic software, the S parameters, E-field distribution and farfield pattern of the JJ array are studied by adjusting the width of the bowtie antennae. The results show that standing waves are formed in the dielectric substrate around 420 GHz, which could contribute to the coherent terahertz emission of the superconducting oscillators.

Quasi-Optical 2-D Josephson Junction Array Oscillators with On-Chip Inductive Tuning Structures

B. Liu, Michael J. Wengler

Progress in understanding the mechanism of coherent oscillation in twodimensional (2-D) Josephson junction arrays has been made through analysis of the coupling circuit between two Josephson junctions. For a 2-D array to oscillate in phase, capacitive coupling is required for adjacent junctions in the same row and inductive coupling for adjacent junctions in the same column of the array. Computer simulation has been developed for two junctions coupled through a general circuit to find the optimum coupling between two junctions. The junctions in the array are also integrated with inductive tuning elements to tune out the junctions' parasitic capacitance. We have built 2-D Josephson junction arrays but no coherent oscillation has yet been observed.
