Finite-size scaling of the entanglement entropy of the quantum Ising chain with homogeneous, periodically modulated and random couplings

Ferenc Iglói, Yu-Cheng Lin

Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effective critical point in the finite sample. On the basis of homogeneous chains, we demonstrate that the scaling behavior of the entropy near the quantum phase transition is in agreement with the universality hypothesis, and calculate the shift of the effective critical point, which has different scaling behaviors for open and for periodic boundary conditions.

Quantum Fluctuations of the Transverse Field Ising Chain

A. W. Kinross, H. A. Dabkowska, G. M. Luke +2 more

The concept of T = 0 quantum phase transi-tions has emerged as an overarching theme in strongly correlated electron physics [1–9]. The nature of quantum fluctuations near the quantum critical point, however, remains enigmatic [10]. How well does the quantum criticality account for finite temperature properties? How high in tem-perature does the effect of the quantum critical point persist?[10, 11] The dearth of appropriate model materials has not permitted experimental-ists to address these fundamental questions even for the transverse field Ising chain (TFIC), a cel-ebrated textbook example of quantum criticality [6]. Here we use NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Res-onance) to map the evolution of quantum spin fluctuations in CoNb2O6 [12–14], which has re-cently been proposed as an ideal model material for the TFIC [15, 16]. We will demonstrate that the effect of the quantum critical point persists to a remarkably high temperature, T ∼ 0.4J, where the exchange coupling J is the only energy scale in the problem.

Thermal Kosterlitz–Thouless transitions in the 1/ r 2 long-range ferromagnetic quantum Ising chain revisited

Stephan Humeniuk

Abstract For the inverse square long-range ferromagnetic Ising chain in a transverse field, the thermal phase boundary of the floating Kosterlitz–Thouless phase is obtained for several values of the transverse field down to the quantum critical point. The sharp domain walls in the classical model are increasingly smeared out by the transverse field, which is evidenced by a pronounced broadening of the non-universal bump in the specific heat. The discernability of KT critical scaling in finite-size simulations is discussed.
