Abstract

Optical quantum memories (QMs) are one of the fundamental building blocks in quantum information science (QIS). They might find important use in quantum communication and computation applications. Rare-earth ions (REIs) have been investigated for decades for their optical properties. They exhibit excellent coherence properties when cooled down to cryogenic temperatures. Not surprisingly, they emerged as a promising candidate for use in QIS as QMs. In this thesis, we investigated the quantum storage of photonic qubits in a Pr3+ :Y2SiO5 (PrYSO) crystal for potential use in quantum communication and networking applications. We started by constructing the experimental setup and the laser system from scratch as our research group had just been established at the beginning of this PhD study. First experiments included spectroscopy of the PrYSO system in order to identify the electronic transitions that are suitable for the QM experiments. We used the atomic frequency comb (AFC) memory protocol in all the experiments presented in this thesis. We also developed complex pulse sequences that are necessary for the optical preparation of an AFC. As a first experiment, we demonstrated the storage of photonic polarization qubits encoded in weak coherent states in the excited states of Pr3+ ions for a predetermined storage time of 500 ns. This had not been achieved previously due to the polarization dependent absorption of the material. We achieved average storage fidelities of ~95% which surpass the best achievable value with a measure and prepare strategy, thus proving the quantum character of our interface. Nevertheless, in order to be implemented in realistic quantum networking architectures, a QM should have the capability of on-demand retrieval of the stored information. As a first step towards this goal, our next experiment concerned the transfer of the input pulses to and from the long-lived hyperfine ground levels of Pr3+ ions, albeit with bright pulses. Furthermore, by performing time-bin interference experiments, we demonstrated that the coherence is preserved during the storage, transfer and retrieval processes. Temporal multimode storage in the spin-states up to 5 modes was also shown. Finally, in the last part of this thesis we demonstrated a solid-state spinwave quantum memory, with qubits encoded in weak coherent states at the single photon level. Storing and retrieving single-photon level fields in the ground levels of the PrYSO system is challenging as the strong control pulses and the weak input pulse to be stored in the memory are separated by only 10:2 MHz. The control pulses create noise, mostly as free-induction decay, fluorescence and scattering off the optical surfaces. In order to circumvent this problem we employed narrow-band spectral, temporal and spatial filtering. By using spectral-hole burning based narrow band filter created in a second PrYSO crystal, we could achieve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 10 for input pulses with mean photon number of around 1. The high SNR we achieved allowed us to store and recall time-bin qubits with conditional fidelities again higher than that is possible with a measure and prepare strategy. This experiments also represents the first demonstration of a quantum memory for time-bin qubits with on demand read-out of the stored quantum information. The results presented in this thesis fill an important gap in the field of solid-state quantum memories and open the way for the long-lived storage of non-classical states of light. They further strengthen the position of REI based systems in QIS, specifically as nodes in scalable quantum network architectures.

Quantum memory protocols for photonic solid-state devices

Kutlu Kutluer

A photonic quantum memory (QM) is a device that has the capability of storing a quantum state of light and retrieving back after a controlled time. It is an important element in quantum information science and is, among other applications, a crucial device for quantum repeater architectures which have been proposed to overcome the loss and the decoherence issues in long distance transmission of photons. Rare earth ion doped solid state systems are promising candidates for QMs which combine the advantages of solid state systems, such as scalability and reduced experimental complexity, with the long coherence time typically found in atomic systems. In this thesis, I investigated three different QM protocols in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. The first part describes here the first demonstration of the spectral hole memory (SHoMe) protocol which was proposed theoretically in 2009. This protocol relies on slowing down the light in a long-lived spectral hole and transferring the excitations to the spin state. We first prepare a spectral hole, then send an input pulse whose bandwidth is comparable with the hole and stop the compressed light in the crystal by transferring the off-resonant coherence to the spin state with an optical p pulse. Later a second p pulse transfers the coherence back and leads to the emission of the stored light. We reached a storage and retrieval efficiency of around 40% in the classical regime, and of 31% in the single photon level, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 33 ± 4 for a mean input photon number of 1. These results demonstrate the most efficient and noiseless spin-wave solid-state optical memory at the single photon level to date. The second part of the thesis describes new experiments using the well-known atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol. It is based on tailoring the inhomogeneously broadened absorption profile of the rare earth with periodic absorptive peaks, which induces the re-emission of the absorbed light field after a certain time determined by the separation between the peaks. In this chapter I describe several AFC experiments. First I present the storage of frequency converted telecom photons into our crystal where we obtained a total efficiency of 1.9 ± 0.2 % for a storage time of 1.6 µs storage time and signal-to-noise ratio of more than 200 for a mean input photon number of 1. Then I discuss the results of improved excited state storage efficiency values for long storage times where we achieved 30% at short storage times and up to 17% at 10 µs storage time. And finally I present a spin-wave AFC experiment where we obtained a signal-to-noise ratio value of 28 ± 8 for a mean input photon number of 1, the highest value achieved so far for this kind of experiment. Finally, in the last part, I describe the first demonstration of a solid-state photon pair source with embedded multimode quantum memory. The aim of the protocol is to combine a single photon source and a QM in one ensemble as in the well-known Duan-Lukin-Zoller-Cirac (DLCZ) scheme however this time not in a cold atomic ensemble but in a solid-state crystal. The protocol takes advantage of the AFC protocol for rephasing the ions and obtaining efficient read-out. The use of AFC also makes the protocol temporally multi-mode. In the experiment, after the AFC preparation we send an on-resonant write pulse and detect the decayed Stokes photons which herald single spin excitations. At a later time a read pulse transfers the spin excitation back to the excited state and we detect the anti-Stokes photons. We show strong non-classical second order cross-correlations between the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons and demonstrate storage of 11 temporal modes. The results presented in this thesis represent a significant contribution to the field of solid-state quantum memories and an important steps towards the realization of scalable quantum network architectures with solid state systems.

A multimode solid-state quantum memory for single photons

Alessando Seri

Quantum memories (QMs) for light represent a fundamental ingredient for the development of a quantum internet. Among other applications, they are a building block for the distribution of entanglement on large scale, i.e. for the realization of a quantum repeater architecture. Rare earth doped crystals (REDCs) are a promising candidate towards this goal. In my thesis I use a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. The longest storage time and the highest retrieval efficiency for a solid-state memory measured so far, were demonstrated with this system (in the classical regime). However, the main advantages of solid-state platforms are their suitability for miniaturization and integration as well as their inhomogeneous broadening, which enables broadband storage and spectral multiplexing. In this thesis we demonstrate an on-demand solid-state QM for real single photons. Moreover we study new platforms for integrated QM based on the same material. We employ the atomic frequency comb (AFC) technique, which is the most promising storage protocol in terms of temporal multiplexing up to now. Until the start of my PhD there was still no demonstration of storage of a real quantum state of light with an on-demand readout in REDCs. We achieved this in the course of this thesis, measuring also for the first time (and only, at the time of writing) non-classical correlation between a single spin wave in a solid-state QM and a telecom photon. After proving the suitability of Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystals for on-demand QMs, we demonstrated novel types of integrated optical memories based on the same system. We studied the spectroscopic and coherence properties of the ions in laser-written waveguides fabricated by fs-laser micromachining. These projects were developed in collaboration with Dr. R. Osellame and Dr. G. Corrielli at Politecnico di Milano, who fabricated the waveguides and analysed their guiding properties. In a first kind of waveguide, called type II, we performed the first storage with on-demand retrieval ever done in solid-state integrated optical memories (with classical light). We continued analysing a so-called type I waveguide, in which the mode-size is comparable with the mode guided in a single-mode fiber at the same wavelength. Here we showed storage of heralded single-photons for a pre-programmed time. The demonstrated storage time, 5.5 µs, is the longest quantum storage demonstrated in any integrated waveguide up to now. Finally, we performed in the same waveguide storage of the whole spectrum of a frequency-multiplexed heralded photon, spanning a range of frequencies of ˜ 4 GHz. The photon is naturally multiplexed due to the generation method used, namely cavity-enhanced SPDC. The possibility of storing such a broad spectrum comes from the intrinsic inhomogeneous broadening present in REDCs. Together with the 15 frequency modes constituting the multiplexed photon, 9 temporal modes were stored thanks to the intrinsic temporal multimodality of the AFC protocol. The method used to fabricate our waveguides, fs-laser micromachining, is the only one to our knowledge that allows for direct 3D fabrication in the substrate. In the future, this will yield matrices of fiber-pigtailed waveguide-based QMs, thus enabling a high degree of spatial multiplexing, which nowadays is mostly exploited in atomic clouds, where temporal and spectral multiplexing are more difficult to achieve. The crystal, the protocol and the waveguide fabrication technique employed in this thesis, represent all together a very promising system, opening the way for a future quantum repeater architecture based on scalable highly multiplexed QMs.

Quantum control of single spin excitations in cold atomic quantum memories

Boris Albrecht

Optical quantum memories are important devices in quantum information science. In particular, they are building blocks of quantum repeater architectures that have been proposed to increase the range of quantum communication beyond the limits set by losses in optical fibers. In this thesis, we report experiments with a quantum memory based on cold atoms. We focus on two important aspects relevant for using the memories as quantum repeater nodes: the connectivity to the optical fiber network, and the ability to operate in a time-multiplexed fashion. The core of the work presented in this thesis was the implementation of a quantum memory based on spontaneous Raman scattering, following the protocol of Duan, Lukin, Cirac and Zoller (DLCZ). The memory is implemented with a cold ensemble of 87Rb atoms loaded in a magneto optical trap. Single collective atomic spin excitations (spin-waves) are created in a heralded manner, before being retrieved by conversion into strongly non-classically correlated single photons. Our system showed measured second-order cross-correlation function values up to 200, an inferred intrinsic retrieval efficiency inside the science chamber up to 44%, and a memory lifetime up to 55 µs. Current realizations of DLCZ quantum memories present several limitations, reducing the maximum practical distance achievable for quantum repeaters based on these systems. We partially addressed two of them. The first one originates from high absorption in optical fibers at the operating wavelength of 780 nm. The second one is that current demonstrations only allow the creation of spin-waves in single temporal modes, limiting the entanglement generation rates in quantum repeaters protocols. A good solution to alleviate the first limitation is to translate the wavelength of the single photons to the telecom C-band, where absorption is minimal, while preserving their quantum characteristics. For this, we demonstrated an ultra-low-noise solid state photonic quantum interface based on an integrated-waveguide in a non-linear PPLN crystal. We converted heralded single photons emitted by the DLCZ quantum memory at 780 nm to the telecommunication wavelength of 1552 nm. We achieved a maximum signal-to-noise ratio of 80 for a mean input photon number of 1, allowing us to show significant non-classical correlations between the heralding and converted photons via the violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. To address the second limitation, we demonstrated the first experimental steps towards the realization of a temporally multiplexed DLCZ-type quantum repeater node. We showed active control of the spin-waves created in our quantum memory by means of an external magnetic field gradient inducing an inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic hyperfine levels. Acting on this gradient allows active dephasing and rephasing of individual spin-waves, enabling spin-wave creation in multiple temporal modes and read out a specific time-bin only. We showed that the active rephasing technique preserves the non-classical statistics of the heralded photons via the observation of anti-bunching. We then created spin-waves in two temporal modes and demonstrated selective read-out of only one of them with a selectivity up to 92%. All these results pave the way towards the realization of future temporally multiplexed quantum repeater nodes based on the DLCZ protocol.

Quantum light source compatible with solid-state quantum memories and telecom networks

Daniel Rieländer

This PhD thesis is in the scope of experimental quantum communication. It deals with correlated photon pairs of which one photon is stored in a solid state device, while the other photon is at telecom wavelength. Quantum correlation between a photon at telecom wavelength and a photon stored in a quantum memory is an important resource for future applications like quantum repeaters, allowing the transmission quantum states over long distances. During the first part of this thesis, a novel photon pair source has been developed, based on spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) inside a bow-tie cavity. SPDC is a non-linear process which splits a pump photon sporadically into two correlated photons, called signal and idler photon. The source used in this work has been designed to be compatible with a solid state quantum memory based on a Praseodymium doped crystal, using the atomic frequency comp (AFC) protocol. This material has shown promising properties for classical light storage. However, it features a small storage bandwidth of 4 MHz at 606 nm, which sets stringent requirements for the photons to be stored. To match these requirements the SPDC process takes place inside a bowtie cavity which is resonant with the created signal and idler photons. The difference between storage wavelength and telecom wavelength (1436 nm in our case) leads to widely non-degenerate photon pairs. These double resonance leads to a strong clustering effect, which suppresses a high number of redundant spectral modes. The created photon spectrum is investigated carefully and consists of three clusters with few well separated modes. The width of each mode is around 2 MHz and matches the requirement for the quantum memory. Single mode operation was achieved by placing an additional Fabry-Perot cavity in the idler field at 1436 nm. This resulted in the demonstration of the narrowest photon pairs consisting of a spectral single mode, created by SPDC to date. In the second part of the thesis, heralded single photons at 606 nm were created by the detection of a photon at 1436 nm. These heralded photons were then stored as collective optical excitations in a praseodymium crystal, using the AFC scheme. Non-classical correlation between the heralding photon and the stored and retrieved photons were observed for storage time up to 4 µs, 20 times longer than achieved in previous solid state quantum memory experiments. Further development on the source, led to improved results, including an increase of coincidence count rate by one order of magnitude and a heralding efficiency of 28 %. The single photon nature of the heralded photon was also measured directly by showing strong antibunching of the 606 nm signal field. These improvements made the created photons compatible with the storage in the spin state of the praseodymium level scheme, using the full AFC protocol. That enabled an extended storage time of 11 µs with on demand readout of the stored photon. The last part of the thesis explores another important resource for the distribution of quantum states with a quantum repeater, entanglement between the created photon pairs. Here we show a rather new approach of entanglement, which is well suited for narrow band photons based on frequency bins. We take advantage of the fact that the source naturally creates several energy correlated well separated frequency modes. In order to show the coherent superposition of the frequency modes, we use electro-optical modulators to coherently mix them. We could show high-visibility two-photon interference fringes, a strong indicator for entanglement in the frequency domain. The results presented in this thesis open the door for the demonstration of entanglement between a solid-state spin-wave quantum memory and a photon at telecom wavelength. This represents an important step for the realization of quantum repeaters using solid state resources.

Exploring quantum memory schemes in cold atoms for quantum repeaters

Lukas Heller

(English) Quantum memories are devices that are able to store photonic quantum states and entanglement. Future quantum networks, which could enhance cybersecurity through quantum key distribution, improve the precision in atomic clock networks, and connect quantum devices over long distances, rely on them. This thesis reports on experiments towards improved quantum memories for quantum repeaters used in long-distance quantum communication. The quantum memory is based on a cloud of laser-cooled Rubidium-87. Thanks to collective interference effects, this system enhances the light-matter interaction compared to that of a single atom. This is exploited to either create long-lived quantum correlations between light and atomic excitations through probabilistic light scattering (DLCZ protocol) or to efficiently absorb an incoming single photon (Raman protocol). In both cases, the excitation is retrieved after a programmable delay as a single photon. An optical cavity around the atoms further enhances the light-matter coupling. In a first experiment, the DLCZ protocol is combined with a photon echo protocol, allowing for the sequential creation of excitations in N distinguishable temporal modes. This is known as temporal multiplexing. Multiplexing improves the rate at which entanglement is created in a network link by a factor N. Here, the cavity is essential to suppress noise originating from the probabilistic scattering of light in the DLCZ protocol. Ten temporal modes are stored while maintaining strong quantum correlations between the scattered photon and the atomic excitation. In a second experiment, a quasi-deterministic single photon is stored in the cloud following the Raman protocol. The photon originates from an ensemble of laser-cooled Rydberg atoms. Strong dipole-dipole interactions prevent the excitation of more than one atom to the Rydberg level, leading to the creation of a single collective Rydberg excitation which is later retrieved as a single photon. A deterministic source, opposed to a probabilistic source, improves the entanglement creation rate as it generates single photons at higher rates. The single photon is stored and faithfully retrieved from the memory while maintaining its single-photon nature. The cavity is not being used in this experiment. In a third experiment, the retrieval efficiency of a stored excitation is increased by cavity-enhancing the read-out process. Highly-efficient memories are important because the entanglement distribution scales strongly with memory efficiency. The intra-cavity efficiency could be improved by a factor 2-3, depending on the protocol, even for a non-optimal cavity setup. Finally, ongoing work towards efficient entanglement between an atomic excitation and a telecom photon is presented, involving a cavity-enhanced DLCZ memory, an atomic dipole trap and quantum frequency conversion (QFC) to the telecom C-band. As the memory operates in the optical domain, where photonic transmission losses are large, QFC will be needed to communicate over large distances. This setup will be used in the future for a hybrid experiment connecting the cold atomic memory to a solid state memory. These investigations target intrinsic limitations of early, proof-of-principle quantum links. They can therefore help to build practical links in the future.

Towards efficient quantum repeater nodes based on solid-state quantum memories

Stefano Duranti

(English) Quantum repeaters are the foundation of future long-distance quantum networks. In most architectures, their functional core is constituted by quantum memories, which are devices that can store and re-emit photonic quantum information on-demand. The goal of this thesis is to progress towards efficient quantum repeater nodes enabling quantum correlations between telecom photons and matter qubits. To these ends, we performed three main experiments. In our first work, we built a solid-state entanglement photon source with embedded storage capabilities. This emissive quantum memory was implemented in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal, by means of the atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol. Thanks to the AFC, we were able to adapt the Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller (DLCZ) protocol, initially conceived for cold atoms, to a solid-state ensemble. This experiment proved that we can produce light-matter entanglement between a heralding photon, at 606 nm, and a spin-wave excitation delocalized inside the ensemble. The matter excitation could be read on-demand at a later time with a read pulse, and mapped as a second photon, at 606 nm as well, emitted by the memory. Quantum correlations between the two photons were measured, enabling the violation of a Bell inequality, thus demonstrating the presence of entanglement. The read-out efficiency of this experiment was low, 1.6%, but solutions were identified to increase this value. In the second experiment, we laid the groundwork for the quantum frequency conversion (QFC) of these photons to the telecom band. The long duration of these photons, up to 1 µs, makes their conversion with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) challenging. The conversion from the visible 606 nm wavelength to the telecom regime (1552 nm) was achieved by difference-frequency generation (DFG) in a PPLN waveguide using a strong pump field at 994 nm. A proof of principle with weak coherent pulses showed that we can convert µs-long photons with the low heralding efficiency of the previous experiment with a SNR around 2.6. This sets the stage for interfacing an AFC-DLCZ memory, working at 606 nm, with the telecom network and with material systems working at a different wave length. Finally, in the last experiment, we implemented an AFC impedance-matched cavity (IMC) storage experiment. It has been demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the IMC enhances the storage and read-out efficiency of the AFC protocol. We harnessed this cavity to store weak coherent Gaussian pulses with up to 62% efficiency. Moreover, we stored weak coherent time-bin qubits in the same system, achieving 52% efficiency and, with an additional analysis carried out by means of an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder AFC-based interferometer, assessing a measured fidelity of 95% for the retrieved qubit, leading to a quantum memory fidelity compatible with 100%, within uncertainty. We additionally studied the influence of slow-light effects in our crystal, confirming that they lead to a reduction of cavity bandwidth by two orders of magnitude. Moreover, the AFC storage time was extended up to 50 µs, to certify that the efficiency enhancement holds for different combs. The achievements of this thesis represent the state of the art for the AFC efficiency and for qubit storage in solid-state systems, and pave the way towards efficient quantum memories. In addition, we reported the first demonstration of a solid-state photon pair source of entangled photons with embedded solid-state multimode memory. The results accomplished by this last AFC-DLCZ experiment in terms of heralding efficiency make it possible to interface it with our quantum frequency conversion experiment. Indeed, the QFC experiment, combined with the AFC-DLCZ one, enables to establish a quantum node and to interface it with different kind of nodes via conversion to the telecom band.

(Català) Les memòries quàntiques són dispositius capaços d'emmagatzemar estats quàntics fotònics i entrellaçament.
