A note on coherence power of n-dimensional unitary operators

Abstract

The coherence power of a quantum channel, that is, its maximum ability to increase the coherence of input states, is a fundamental concept within the framework of the resource theory of coherence. In this note we discuss various possible definitions of coherence power and coherence rate and their basic properties. Then we prove that the coherence power of a unitary operator acting on a qubit, computed with respect to the l1-coherence measure, can be calculated by maximizing its coherence gain over pure incoherent states. We proceed to show that this result fails in the general case, that is, the maximal coherence gain is found when acting on a state with non-vanishing coherence in the case of the l1-coherence and dimension N > 2, the relative entropy of coherence and the geometric measure of coherence.

A note on coherence power of N-dimensional unitary operators

In this note we discuss various possible definitions of coherence power. Then we prove that the coherence power of a unitary operator acting on a qubit, computed with respect to the $l_1$-coherence measure, can be calculated by maximizing its coherence gain over pure incoherent states. We proceed to show that this result fails for dimensions N>2, that is, the maximal coherence gain is found when acting on a state with non-vanishing coherence.

Coherence-generating power of quantum unitary maps and beyond

Paolo Zanardi A, Georgios Styliaris, Lorenzo Campos Venuti

Given a preferred orthonormal basis $B$ in the Hilbert space of a quantum system, we define a measure of the coherence-generating power of a unitary operation with respect to $B$. This measure is the average coherence generated by the operation acting on a uniform ensemble of incoherent states. We give its explicit analytical form in any dimension and provide an operational protocol to directly detect it. We characterize the set of unitaries with maximal coherence-generating power and study the properties of our measure when the unitary is drawn at random from the Haar distribution. For a large state-space dimension a random unitary has, with overwhelming probability, nearly maximal coherence-generating power with respect to any basis. Finally, extensions to general unital quantum operations and the relation to the concept of asymmetry are discussed.

Coherence generating power of quantum unitary maps

Paolo Zanardi A, Georgios Styliaris, Lorenzo Campos Venuti

Given a preferred orthonormal basis $B$ in the Hilbert space of a quantum system we define a measure of the coherence generating power of a unitary map with respect to $B$. We give its explicit analytical form and provide an operational protocol to directly detect it. This measure vanishes if and only if the unitary map transforms all the incoherent states into themselves and is non-increasing under pre- or post-processing by incoherent operations. We characterize the set of unitaries with maximal coherence generating power and study the properties of our measure when the unitary is drawn at random from the Haar distribution. For large state-space dimension a random unitary has, with overwhelming probability, nearly maximal coherence generating power with respect to any basis. Finally, extensions to general unital completely positive maps and the relation to the concept of asymmetry are discussed.

Cohering Power of Unitary Operations and De-cohering of Quantum operations

Zhengjun Xi, Ming‐Liang Hu, Yongming Li +1 more

In this paper, we consider the cohering power of unitary operation, which is defined by the maximum coherence caused by an unitary operation acting on incoherent states. We obtain that the optimizations can be reduced to a simple discrete set that depends only on the fixed reference basis. Then, we investigate that the de-cohering power of quantum channel, which is defined by the maximum decay of coherence caused by quantum channel acting on the maximally coherent states. Based on the relative entropy, we discuss the cohering power of 1-qubit and 2-qubit unitary operations and the de-cohering power of quantum channel on 1-qubit system. Finally, we study the relation between the coherence and the discord via incoherent operation.

Cohering power and decohering power of Gaussian unitary operations

Yangyang Wang, Xiaofei Qi, Jinchuan Hou +1 more

Having a suitable measure to quantify the coherence of quantum states, a natural task is to evaluate the power of quantum channels for creating or destroying the coherence of input quantum states. In the present paper, by introducing the maximal coherent Gaussian states based on the relative entropy measure of coherence, we propose the (generalized) cohering power and the (generalized) decohering power of Gaussian unitary operations for continuous-variable systems. Some basic properties are obtained and the cohering power and decohering power of two special kinds of Gaussian unitary operations are calculated.

Resource theory of coherence: Beyond states

Khaled Ben Dana, María García Díaz, Mohamed Mejatty +1 more

We generalize the recently proposed resource theory of coherence (or superposition) [T. Baumgratz et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401 (2014); A. Winter and D. Yang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 120404 (2016)] to the setting where not just the free (``incoherent'') resources, but also the manipulated objects, are quantum operations rather than states. In particular, we discuss an information theoretic notion of the coherence capacity of a quantum channel and prove a single-letter formula for it in the case of unitaries. Then we move to the coherence cost of simulating a channel and prove achievability results for unitaries and general channels acting on a $d$-dimensional system; we show that a maximally coherent state of rank $d$ is always sufficient as a resource if incoherent operations are allowed, and one of rank ${d}^{2}$ for ``strictly incoherent'' operations. We also show lower bounds on the simulation cost of channels that allow us to conclude that there exists bound coherence in operations, i.e., maps with nonzero cost of implementing them but zero coherence capacity; this is in contrast to states, which do not exhibit bound coherence.
